Preseason Rankings: The Top 25

The college football season hasn't fully kicked off, but we already got a thrilling finish in Ireland between two ranked teams. Iowa State converted a gutsy fourth down late in the game to hold off Kansas State 24-21.

Despite not being able to beat Michigan, Ryan Day kept his job and won a Natty.

Ohio State of course enters as the defending National Championship, which is a disgusting, but true sentence to write. They already have a tough task in Week 1 with the Texas Longhorns and Arch Manning trying to snatch that crown. 8 SEC teams lead the way in the Top 25 followed by 5 Big Ten teams, and 4 ACC and Big 12 teams.

Here's a look at the Top 25 to begin the season:

25. Army

Last Year Finish (7, 12-2, AAC Champs)

A Quick Note: Never in the 131 years of Army football had they won 12 games until last season.

Prediction: 9-3

A Quick Note: A great season for the Tigers was thwarted by their inability to even make the AAC Championship.

A Quick Note: The Volunteers failed to seize their opportunity in the SEC against a weaker Alabama and Georgia team.

Prediction: 10-2

22. Missouri

Prediction: 10-2

21. Louisville

Last Year Finish (29, 9-4)

A Quick Note: Jeff Brohm's return brought success, but can they finally take the next step and win the ACC?

A Quick Note: The Gamecocks will try to make their mark in a competitive SEC, but what else is new.

Prediction: 8-4

18. Ole Miss

Last Year Finish (21, 10-3)

A Quick Note: Lane Kiffin has got to be thinking, what else do I have to do to at least make the SEC Championship let alone win it?

Prediction: 9-3

Prediction: 10-2

11. Clemson

Last Year Finish (26, 10-4, ACC Champs)

A Quick Note: The Tigers are like the Houston Astros, they're out of it early and you think they've finally been vanquished, and then they've won the decision by the time the season ends.

A Quick Note: The Fighting Irish are hopefully over all the choking they did in yet another National Championship.

Prediction: 11-1

3. Penn State

Last Year Finish (4, 13-2)

A Quick Note: The Nittany Lions are allowed to be at the top again, but James Franklin is still the coach so expect to see them fail to win another Big Ten title.

Preseason Rankings 50-26: Home of the Group of 5 Future Champions

College football is officially back today and that means I've got to get to work and finish these rankings. Only Sam Houston State was in action on this penultimate list with the Bearkats suffering a collapse at the hands of Western Kentucky. The day started in one island (Ireland) and ended on another (Hawaii).

Here's a look at those teams that are just on the outside looking in at the Top 25.

The Panthers are going to try and make everyone forget the Pirates were so terrible this season by capturing an ACC title.

35. Iowa

Preseason Rankings 75-51: Bowl Hopefuls Try to Crack Six Wins in 2025

We now enter the portion of the rankings where teams that finish here will likely be watching bowl season from home. To be fair, home can be a lot nice for some teams on this list (Hawaii/Coastal Carolina) than others (Northern Illinois/Michigan State).

Preseason Rankings 136-101: The Bottom of the Barrell Gets Two New Teams in 2025

Delaware joins the FBS and might have fans seeing double if they decide to play Michigan.

College Football is back! Week 0 begins on August 23 with a slate of 5 games that opens with a ranked matchup in Dublin, pitting Iowa State against Kansas State, and finishes in Hawaii with the Rainbow Warriors hosting Stanford. 17 more games follow on Thursday, August 28, 11 games on Friday, and a plethora of games on Saturday with the crown jewel in Columbus between Ohio State and Texas. But wait!, there's more. Sunday has two more games and TCU and UNC wrap up the Labor Day Weekend on Monday.

For some teams, this could be their only chance for a win against FCS team, and that could be the case for one of the newest members of the FBS, Delaware. The Blue Hens host their instate rivals, the dreadful Delaware State which ranks 111th in the FCS. How do I know? Well, that's because I've added FCS rankings too and I'm adding it to 136 so that teams aren't rewarded for playing bad FCS teams. Missouri State will also be joining the FBS, unfortunately, they begin their quest at the Coliseum against USC.

Bill Belichick makes the jump from dating college girls to coaching college players.

26 new head coaches enter the fray with Bill Belichick as the headliner taking over for Mack Brown at UNC. Rich Rodriguez makes his return to West Virginia after building up Jacksonville State. The other Power 4 hire was Barry Odom who moves on from UNLV to replace Ryan Walters at Purdue.

Now it's time to look at the bottom feeders of the early season:

136.) Kent State

Last Year Finish (134, 0-12)

A Quick Note: The Golden Flashes have lost 21 games in a row, but that could change in Week 1 with a visit from Merrimack (FCS, 213). That losing streak isn't what got Kenni Burns fired in April, but his apparent lack of payment towards a $20,000 credit card bill on a school issued credit card.

Prediction: 2-10

Joe Harasymiak takes over for Don Brown as the new coach of the Minutemen.

135. UMass

LYF (131, 2-10)

A Quick Note: The Minutemen are no longer Independent and have returned to the MAC and hope for better results than last time.

Prediction: 2-10

134. Delaware

LYF (N/A, played in FCS)

A Quick Note: The Blue Hens look to take CUSA by storm under Ryan Carty who led Delaware to a 9-2 finish in 2024.

Prediction: 3-9

133. Missouri State

LYF (N/A, played in FCS)

A Quick Note: The Bears went 8-4 under Ryan Beard as they transitioned into FBS play in CUSA.

Prediction: 4-8

132. Kennesaw State

LYF (128, 2-10)

A Quick Note: Jerry Mack takes over as head coach after Brian Bohannon didn't make it through the first full season of the FBS.

Prediction: 3-9

131. Tulsa

LYF (119, 3-9)

A Quick Note: Tre Lamb takes over as the head coach after promising tenures at Gardner-Webb and ETSU.

Prediction: 4-8

The incoming Freshman at UTEP are apparently getting everyone excited.

130. UTEP

LYF (125, 3-9)

A Quick Note: Why is it that when I was researching UTEP, I came across several articles hyping up the Freshman class coming into El Paso? Maybe it's the Miners year.

Prediction: 4-8

129. Southern Miss

LYF (133, 1-11)

A Quick Note: Charles Huff takes over at Southern Miss after having a falling out with administration at Marshall despite great success.

Prediction: 4-8

128. Ball State

LYF (121, 3-9)

A Quick Note: Mike Uremovich takes over as the new head coach and makes the short move from Butler.

Prediction: 3-9

127. FIU

LYF (112, 4-8)

A Quick Note: Willie Simmons is back in Florida after helming Florida A&M recently.

Prediction: 4-8

126. New Mexico State

LYF (124, 3-9)

A Quick Note: For just the low price of $72, you can watch the Aggies get lambasted by the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville.

Prediction: 3-9

The Blue Raiders wish their record was more middle and less bottom Tennessee.

125. Middle Tennessee State

LYF (126, 3-9)

A Quick Note: Derek Mason is hoping that year two goes a lot better.

Prediction: 5-7

124. Temple

LYF (120, 3-9)

A Quick Note: KC Keeler was 97-30 at Sam Houston State and hopes to bring that success to Philadelphia.

Prediction: 3-9

123. Purdue

LYF (132, 1-11)

A Quick Note: Barry Odom might have stumbled at Missouri, but he built a name for himself again by bringing UNLV up from the doldrums into college football relevance. The Boilermakers hold one of the longest droughts without being ranked for a Power 4 team at 58 weeks (Nov. 8, 2021).

Prediction: 3-9

122. Georgia State
