In the first installment of Take the Money and Run, we have a potentially overconfident San Jose State team hoping to kickoff their season with an easy win over a weaker FCS school out of the Big Sky.
Rice (1-0) nearly fell to this trap against Prairie View A&M (0-1), but kicked a last second field goal. Louisiana Monroe (1-0) needed a touchdown in the final minute to upend Southeastern Louisiana (0-1), but the Spartans (0-1) were not so fortunate.
Instead, all the money they shelled out for a "sure thing," that even had one Bay Area writer confident of a victory, turned out to be the first FCS upset of the year.
The Aggies (1-0) were led by QB Jake Maier who threw for 446 yards and they carried a 35-21 lead into halftime. My favorite part of this is that the Aggies picked up a safety on SJST's opening drive of the second half.
Luckily for the Spartans it only gets easier. Next week it's off to Washington St and then a trip to Eugene, Oregon, to face the Ducks. Could SJST be the first candidate for 0-12 this season?
