131 Reactions to Week 1 in College Football

What a weekend for college football and I'll be quite honest, I didn't initially see much of what happened, but I can give a first-hand account of how the Florida Atlantic/Ohio contest went down. However, most of you will look for more impactful games for me to reflect on; now that I've watched some highlights and looked at some stats, I am ready to give the week 1 reaction for every team in college football with one sentence for each school.

1. Georgia- The Dawgs took care of business defending their national title with a 49-3 drubbing of former defensive coordinator Dan Lanning and his Oregon Ducks.

2. Ohio State- It wasn't pretty, but the defense silenced their critics and held off the Fighting Irish 21-10.

3. Alabama-The Crimson Tide rolled over a respectable Group of 5 school, but Utah State never stood a chance in Alabama's 55-0 victory.

4. Oklahoma State- The Cowboys' defense lost a lot of people money as they allowed Central Michigan to score twice and beat the spread (21.5) in their 58-44 victory.

5. Michigan-The Wolverines were dominant over Colorado State, but maybe Harbaugh should just pick a quarterback instead of draining their confidence.

6. Notre Dame-The defense was up to the task, but the offense was like Buzz's girlfriend in Home Alone, Woof!

7. Baylor-The Bears had a great day against the Great Danes as they rolled to a 69-10 victory over their FCS opponent.

8. Cincinnati- The Bearcats had several opportunities to get a tough road win at Arkansas, but it wasn't meant to be in a 31-24 loss.

9. Oklahoma-The debut for Brent Venables and Dillon Gabriel went without a hitch against UTEP, 45-13.

10. Texas A&M-The Aggies had a tougher time battling the weather than they did against Sam Houston State (FCS), 31-0.

11. Oregon-The Ducks were plucked on the road against Georgia.

12. Ole Miss-The Rebels were less than impressive in their 28-10 win over Troy.

13. Clemson-Who plays college football on a Monday that's not the National Championship?

14. Utah-It was deja vu for the Utes as they relived their Rose Bowl nightmare, but this time it was a 26-29 loss to the Gators.

15. Houston-The Cougars win one of the wildest games of the weekend as they avoided an upset by UTSA by flying to a 37-35 win in triple overtime.

16. Michigan State- In my second-least favorite match-up of the week, little brother cruised to a 35-13 win over those losers from Kalamazoo.

17. Wake Forest-Losing their first-round talent quarterback didn't seem to be a problem against VMI (FCS).

18. BYU- The rain tried to give South Florida an out, but when it finally let up, the BYU offense rained down points all over the Bulls' defense. 51-20.

19. Wisconsin- The Badgers got a 96-touchdown run and a 100-yard pick-six (both school records) in their 38-0 win over FCS Illinois State.

20. Iowa- The best score of the weekend, the Hawkeyes scored 7 points on a field goal and two safeties to win 7-3 over South Dakota State (FCS).

21. NCST- It's better to be lucky than good and Dave Doeren couldn't agree more after ECU missed a game-tying and game-winning kick in the final 2 minutes to give the Wolfpack a 21-20 victory.

22. Arkansas-The Razorbacks showed last year wasn't a fluke with a marquee win in Week 1 over the Bearcats.

23. Pitt- A late pick-six in the return of one of college football's best rivalries, gave the Panthers a 38-31 victory in the Backyard Brawl with West Virginia.

24. Kentucky- The Wildcats proved that Kentucky was more than a basketball school with a 37-13 win over Miami (OH).

25. Fresno State- It was easy sailing in Jeff Tedford's return to Fresno as they rolled Cal Poly (FCS).

26. UTSA- The Roadrunners were looking to build off a miracle season in 2021 by upsetting a Top 25 in Week 1 but fell just short in overtime against Houston.

27. Penn State-Sean Clifford has been at Penn State for 10 years it seems, but that experience helped him lead a two-minute drill to rally the Nittany Lions to a key 35-31 Big Ten victory over Purdue.

28. Miami-The Hurricanes won big in Mario Cristobal's debut, a 70-13 beatdown of Bethune-Cookman (FCS).

29. Louisiana- The Ragin's Cajuns may have been looking ahead to Eastern Michigan next week because their week 1 win over SE Louisiana was a bit underwhelming.

30. UCLA- The Bruins were tied at 17 with BGSU before they rattled off 28 unanswered points to roll to the 45-17 win.

31. Purdue- They looked poised to get a big win in Week 1, but the defense had more holes than swiss cheese in the final two minutes to allow the Nittany Lions to rally.

32. Appalachian State- The Mountaineers wouldn't quit against the Tar Heels and nearly capitalized off a late miscue, but had their two-point conversion fell a yard short in a 63-61 loss.

43. Minnesota- Not only did they get to see former coach Jerry Kill but also got to dismantle his New Mexico State Aggies, 38-0.

44. Air Force- If Iowa had to play Northern Iowa (FCS) it might have been different, but the Falcons are a whole different bird and cruised 48-17.

45. Utah State- The Aggies were hoping to be a little more competitive than zero points against Alabama, but a win over UConn in Week 0 has them at 1-1.

46. Arizona State- The win might get vacated in a few months, but the Sun Devils roasted Northern Arizona (FCS).

47. Iowa State- Unlike their in-state rival, the Cyclones had no trouble against their FCS opponent.

48. Auburn- The Tigers had an easy go against Mercer (FCS).

49. UNC- The Tar Heels can score points, but that defense might want to get it figured out quickly.

50. Boston College- The Eagles held the lead for all but the final two minutes of the fourth quarter, but that's all that mattered in their 22-21 loss to Rutgers.

98. Georgia Tech- They are in fact ramblin' wrecks.

99. Colorado State- While it was kind of expected, the Jay Norvell era started off with a rough beginning in Ann Arbor.

119. Southern Miss- The Golden Eagles nearly got a Week 1 win, but fell short in four overtimes to Liberty.

120. Rice- Since Lincoln Riley used to coach a Big 12 school, Rice must have felt at home watching his team score a boatload of points.

121. Ohio- The Bobcats nearly blew a 17-point lead in the final seven minutes, but were able to hold on Rufus the Bobcats' birthday.

122. Louisiana Monroe- The Warhawks got an interception on the first drive, but it was all downhill from there against Texas.
