Final Rankings 120-111: First Year Coaches Unite

Six teams on this portion of the list had coaches in their first year with the team. They ranged from the very experienced Les Miles (Kansas) to first year coach Jake Spavital (Texas State). Then again, it's also the landing spot for one of the longest tenured coaches in college football in Pat Fitzgerald (Northwestern).
Three wins were enough to escape the bottom layer of college football futility, but not enough to avoid this list. Heck four wins weren't enough for Frank Wilson to keep his job at UTSA.

Let's see where everyone landed and if you need to catch up here's the bottom ten (apologies to Ryan McGee and Steve Harvey).

120.)Image result for rice owls football 2019Rice (3-9, 113 WP, 48 LP)
The Owls finished with a bang as they started 0-9 and rattled off three straight. Seven of their first nine came against bowl eligible teams, but they made the most of their weak finish. The three wins are the most since 2016 and are the same amount they finished with in 2017 and 2018 combined.
Mike Bloomgren now has something to build on and has his eyes set on getting Rice back to a bowl game for the first time since their 2014 appearance in the Hawai'i bowl.
Best Win: Middle Tennessee State
Worst Loss: UTSA
2018 Finish: 2-11, No. 125

119.)Image result for Texas State Bobcats football 2019 Texas State (3-9, 106.7 WP, 51.8 LP)
The Jake Spavital era began with rocky and finished even rockier with a 1-6 skid in their final seven games. The Bobcats offense was rather lackluster averaging 18.4 points per game and Tyler Vitt and Gresh Jensen both had an issue completing passes to the other team. It probably didn't help that they couldn't stay upright as the duo was sacked 30 times. For comparison, Clemson's Trevor Lawrence was sacked just ten times all season.
Since joining the FBS in 2012, Texas State has just one winning season when they went 7-5 in 2014, but they were left out of a bowl game that season. After that year the Bobcats have won just 13 games.
Best Win: Georgia State
Worst Loss: Coastal Carolina
2018 Finish: 3-9, No. 117

118.)Image result for Northwestern Wildcats football 2019 Northwestern (3-9, 101.3 WP, 34.9 LP)
These are the kind of seasons that Northwestern was used to before Pat Fitzgerald came to campus. As a player he led the Wildcats to their first bowl game since 1949 and then has gone on to become the winningest coach in school history. A 3-9 campaign is certainly disappointing and one of the biggest drop-offs from last season, but not one that will likely put Fitzgerald in the hot seat.
As for the players, they could not find the endzone. In seven of their nine losses, they scored 15 points or fewer, but found some magic late in the season as they won two of their last three including a 29-10 victory over in-state rival Illinois for the fifth straight season.
Best Win: Illinois
Worst Loss: Purdue
2018 Finish: 9-5 (Big Ten West Champs), No. 37

117.)Image result for bowling green falcons football 2019 Bowling Green (3-9, 97.7 WP, 70.2 LP)
The Falcons might not have had the greatest season, but first year coach Scott Loeffler did something no BGSU coach had done since 2011, beat Toledo. Otherwise it was pretty ugly. The Falcons scored 10 points or less in six games and their other two wins came against Morgan State (FCS) and winless Akron.
After the win over Toledo, the next goal for Bowling Green is to get back to a bowl game. The Falcons haven't been since 2015 when they finished a stretch of four straight appearances as well as three straight MAC East titles.
Best Win: Toledo
Worst Loss: Ohio
2018 Finish: 3-9, No. 116

116.)Image result for georgia tech football 2019 Georgia Tech (3-9, 92.3 WP, 51.1 LP)
The Yellow Jackets are in the awkward transition from being an option team to running a pro-style offense under new coach Geoff Collins. Collins successfully built on what Matt Rhule established at Temple, but his first year in Atlanta was full of misfires. The Ramblin' Wrecks scored 14 points or fewer in six games including a 24-2 loss to Collins' former employer. The devastating blow came with a week three loss in overtime to The Citadel (FCS).
It wasn't all grim as the Jackets posted two wins in ACC play with a thrilling overtime win against Miami and then another close victory over NCST. With such jagged results, it will be hard to tell if Collins will need one more year or if Tech is ready to compete in a weak ACC.
Best Win: Miami (FL)
Worst Loss: The Citadel (FCS)
2018 Finish: 7-6 (Quick Lane Bowl), No. 69

115.)Image result for maryland football 2019 Maryland (3-9, 90 WP, 48.7 LP)
The Terrapins were feeling themselves early in the season after scoring 79 against Howard (FCS) and 63 on No. 21 Syracuse. In fact the polls were so high on the Terps that they had them ranked 21st by week three. Apparently being ranked 21 was not a good omen as Temple knocked off Maryland before Penn State obliterated them 59-0 to bring the record to 2-2. A 48-7 victory over Rutgers seemed to reset the offense.
However, under first year coach Mike Locksley, the Terps dropped their final seven games and scored no more than 16 points in any of their defeats. Maryland hasn't had a winning season since 2014, despite making it to the Quick Lane Bowl in 2016.
Best Win: Syracuse
Worst Loss: Purdue
2018 Finish: 5-7, No. 87

114.)Image result for vanderbilt football 2019 Vanderbilt (3-9, 86.7 WP, 66.8 LP)
The Commodores went from bowl team in 2018 to an SEC team that loses to a Mountain West school, otherwise known as the Arkansas Special. The wins weren't much more impressive as they barely beat Missouri and Northern Illinois to go with a win over FCS member ETSU. Vandy failed to score more than 14 points in their final four SEC games. The loss to Tennessee snapped a three-game win streak over the Volunteers.
Derek Mason has led the Commodores to two bowl games, but Vanderbilt hasn't finished with a winning record in any of his seasons. Depending on the expectations by boosters and the AD, Mason could be in the hot seat next season.
Best Win: Missouri
Worst Loss: UNLV
2018 Finish: 6-7 (Texas Bowl), No. 83

113.)Image result for kansas football 2019 Kansas (3-9, 80.7 WP, 44.3 LP)
The "Mad Hatter" certainly continued what David Beatty's staff started last season, be a pain. While Les Miles would like a better finish, the Jayhawks were certainly a scrappy bunch. They pressed West Virginia, Texas, and Iowa State, and successfully knocked off Texas Tech and Boston College.
Kansas did however do very Kansas like things. First they tried to lose to FCS foe Indiana State before actually losing to Coastal Carolina to become one of the Sun Belt's many wins over Power 5 schools this season. The Jayhawks closed the year out with four straight losses.
Best Win: Boston College
Worst Loss: Coastal Carolina
2018 Finish: 5-7, No. 108
112.)Image result for utsa football 2019 UTSA (4-8, 125 WP, 54.5 LP)
The Frank Wilson era is over in San Antonio. The Roadrunners fired him after four years of 19-29 football. UTSA did take advantage of their slow start by handling the low-hanging fruit on their schedule. That being said, it's been four years since they went bowling and the results have diminished since then, which led to Wilson's exit.
There's a plethora of options to replace Wilson, but whoever comes in, must recruit a very crowded Texas' market.
Best Win: Rice
Worst Loss: North Texas
2018 Finish: 3-9, No. 115

111.)Related image ECU (4-8, 120.5 WP, 50.6 LP)
Mike Houston's tenure at ECU got off to a good start as he went 3-2 to open the season. However, the Pirates found it hard to navigate the seas of the very tough AAC schedule and finished with a 1-6 record to finish the year. They just as easily could've gone 6-6 as they put fear in the hearts of Cincinnati and SMU fans, before both teams won close games.
Houston improved on the win/loss total from last year and didn't lose to an FCS school in the process. The schedule doesn't get any easier in 2020 as they'll play eight teams that finished bowl eligible.
Best Win: UConn
Worst Loss: NCST
2018 Finish: 3-9, No. 114
