Fake College Basketball Tournament: Round of 32- Penn State and Arizona Pull Off Upsets to Reach Sweet 16

The field is set for the Sweet 16 and there are plenty of surprises. Nearly half of those left in the tournament were the lower seeds in their section of the brackets. Northern Iowa (14) is now the lowest seed after Wright State (15) lost in the second round. Here's how today's action finished.

EAST


(1) Dayton 76                                   (9) Florida 66

The Flyers made sure there were going to be at least two number one seeds left in the tournament with a thrashing of the Gators. The Atlantic 10 Champs will move on to face the Big Ten Champs.


(4) Maryland 66                                  (5) Butler 64 OT

The two squads battled back and forth with Butler watching their lead slip away and the game heading for overtime. In overtime the teams kept it close, but the Terrapins made the final bucket of the extra frame to move on for a Sweet 16 date with Dayton.


(6) Penn State 52                                                (3) Villanova 49 OT

The Wildcats coasted through the opening round, but weren't prepared for the the tough task that was the Nittany Lions. Villanova forced overtime, but fell apart in the final minute to allow Penn State the opportunity to advance and take on the lowest seed left in the East.


(7) West Virginia 74                       (15) Wright St 56

The Mountaineers must have thanked their lucky stars when Florida State was bounded by the Raiders. They took advantage of this opportunity by pummelling Wright State out of the tournament. West Virginia will meet Penn State in the Sweet 16.

WEST

(1) Gonzaga 65                               (8) LSU 60

The Tigers had the Bulldogs on the rope, but Gonzaga did enough to hold off the SEC Tournament Champs to secure a spot in the Sweet 16. They'll await the PAC-12 Champions.


(4) Oregon 58                                   (12) Yale 47

Not interested in Yale's Cinderella story, the Ducks quickly capitalized on poor early shooting from the Bulldogs to never give Yale the same chance that Michigan allowed. Oregon moves on for a Pacific Northwest showdown in the Sweet 16 against Gonzaga.


(3) Seton Hall 52                                    (11) Indiana 46

A cold stretch towards the end cooled off the Hoosiers dreams of returning to the Sweet 16. Instead it will be the Pirates returning, as the lone team from East of the Rocky Mountains. They'll have another surprise match-up in their half.


(7) Arizona 74                                       (2) San Diego State 66

The Aztecs struggled to survive the Anteaters, while the Wildcats cruised easily over Texas Tech in the opening round. That confidence boost led Arizona back to the Sweet 16 as they had no problems in dispatching San Diego State. Arizona will face Seton Hall.
