American Recap Week 2

The American had an average week. The top team won, some trophies were won and lost, three wins over Power 5 schools, but also some bad losses to non-Power 5 teams, here's what that looked like.

Last week Memphis (1-1) scored 66 while Navy (1-1) allowed 59, so it seemed like points were going to come in abundance, but it was a late comeback by the Midshipmen in a low scoring game instead.
Malcolm Perry rallied Navy with one of the best runs of the season and scored twice on 166 yards. Darrell Henderson gashed the Midshipmen for 212 yards and three touchdowns on just 13 carries to lead the way for Memphis.
The Tigers had a chance late in the game, but had their drive stall on fourth down with 1:33 at the Navy 34.

The Yellow Jackets (1-1) and Bulls (2-0) brought the fireworks very early in the game as they scurried to a 17-14 first quarter finish.

The Yellow Jackets turned a first drive interception into a field goal. Terrence Horne took the ensuing kickoff back 98 yards. TaQuon Marshall scampered 45 yards for a score to put GT up 10-7. Horne took that ensuing kickoff back 97 yards. Marshall responded with an 81-yard touchdown run.

The two teams traded blows throughout the game, but the Yellow Jackets committed two turnovers in their final three drives while South Florida put together three straight touchdown drives to finish off Tech. The Bulls head to Illinois (2-0) to face the Fighting Illini.

The Pirates (1-1) were stunned by FCS foe NCAT last week and North Carolina (0-2) kept it close with Cal, so it looked good for UNC. The last meeting resulted in a 70-41 dismantling of the Tar Heels.
So why was anyone surprised when ECU extended their win streak to three over UNC and held the Tar Heels scoreless in the second half. The Pirates running backs scampered for 220 yards and four touchdowns in the win.
ECU hopes for an ACC victory next week, this time at No. 13 Virginia Tech (2-0).

Kevin Sumlin might be wishing that he was still coaching Houston (2-0) as the Cougars blitzed his new crew as they held a 31-0 lead over Arizona (0-2) going into the half. Deriq King tossed four touchdowns and ran for another to two to dispatch of the Wildcats.
Houston will head to Texas Tech (1-1) next week.

McKenzie Milton was not on his A-game, tossing three interceptions, but what better time to experiment with throws than against SCST (0-2) who have scored just six points this season.
Instead the Golden Knights (2-0) relied on their ground game to run for 316 yards and four touchdowns, while the defense forced three interceptions of their own.
UCF will head to North Carolina to face the winless Tar Heels (0-2).

The Green Wave (1-1) were ready for the trap that was Nicholls St (1-1). Last week the Colonels stunned Kansas in overtime, but this week Tulane used Corey Dauphine to fight off any uprising. Dauphine had six carries for 152 yads and three scores to lead the way for the Green Wave.
Tulane will head to UAB (1-1) to take on a mysterious Blazers team.
Image result for buffalo temple footballBuffalo 36-Temple 29
Another game that Temple (0-2) fans likely circled as a win at the beginning of the season, but a late score gave the Bulls (2-0) the win.
The Owls rallied in the fourth quarter with a blocked punt in the endzone and a two-point conversion (a reverse that ended up turning into a pass and a one handed grab) to tie the game. The Bulls responded with an eight play 58-yard drive that retook the lead. Frank Nutile brought the Owls right back with his third touchdown of the day, a three yard pass to Branden Mack.

Buffalo bled the clock and got a big play on a third and ten when Tyree Jackson threw his third touchdown of the day, a 29-yard connection with Anthony Johnson to take a 36-29 lead. Temple got the ball to near midfield with :55 seconds left, but Nutile was sacked and stripped with the Bulls recovering for the win.

Temple will travel to Maryland (2-0) next week.

Tulsa's (1-1) rally started a little too late as they came within seven before Sam Ehlinger found Tre Watson to put the Longhorns (1-1) up 28-21.
The Golden Hurricane wouldn't be denied as Luke Skipper found Keenen Johnson for a 35-yard touchdown to bring the game back to within seven with 4:53 left. Tulsa elected to kick deep and Texas made them pay by playing keep away and running out the clock for the win.
Tulsa welcomes Arkansas St (1-1) next week.
Image result for uconn boise st footballNo. 20 Boise St 62-UConn 7
