Arkansas (1-2) entered the game 9-0 all-time against North Texas (3-0), but the Mean Green were out for some history of their own, moving to 3-0 for the first time since 1989.
Mason Fine only threw for 281 yards and a touchdown, down from his usual production. However, when three Arkansas quarterbacks throw six interceptions, including a pick-six, you don't need much offense.
It also helps when special teams gives you one of the top plays of the year.
North Texas travels to Liberty (1-1) where the Flames had their game postponed by Hurricane Florence this week.
Charlotte (2-1, 1-0 CUSA) and Old Dominion (0-3, 0-2) were forced to move their game up three days because of Hurricane Florence, but it ended up coming down to early mistakes by Old Dominion that came back to haunt the Monarchs on Thursday.
The 49ers got on the board first with Chris Reynolds first touchdown pass of the game. The Monarchs were set up when Mark Quattlebaum fumbled a punt return to set up a short scoring drive, but the 49ers would block the extra point. Charlotte added two field goals, but Lala Davis punched it in for ODU late in the second quarter for his first score of the day. Lacking confidence or chasing points, the Monarchs elected to go four two and missed to trail 13-12 at the half.
Davis gave the Monarchs their first lead of the game with his second rushing touchdown, but once again ODU went for two and missed. Reynolds tossed his second TD of the day, this one to Quattlebaum to redeem his fumble from earlier. To make matters worse for the Monarchs, the 49ers showed how to properly execute a two-point conversion to take a 21-18 lead. The two teams traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but those three missed points loomed large as the Monarchs could not keep Charlotte from running out the clock.
Old Dominion's search for win number one doesn't look great with Virginia Tech (2-0) on the horizon. Charlotte will head to UMass (1-3) next.
Tulane (1-2) attempted a furious comeback, but the Blazers (2-1) were able to hold off the Green Wave.
Down 21-7 at the half, Jonathan Banks connected with Darnell Mooney for touchdowns on the Green Wave's first two possessions of the second half. Tulane tied it with a field goal, but the Blazers drove 93 yards to answer with the go ahead touchdown with 2:19 left.
The Green Wave fumbled on their next drive, but held UAB to get the ball back with 53 seconds. Tulane marched to the UAB 38, but Jonathan Banks was sacked by Kylen Binn to end the game.
The Blazers will take a week and then host Charlotte on Sept. 29.
The Owls (2-1) jumped out to a 36-7 lead on the Wildcats (1-2) and cruised to an easy win.
FAU had 376 yards rushing and Devin Singletary had 84 of those yards with five touchdowns. Quarterback Akevious Williams accounted for all four Bethune Cookman touchdowns (3 passing, 1 rushing).
The Owls have a big showdown on Friday as they head to Orlando to face UCF (2-0).
In the rematch of a game that was postponed because of Hurricane Maria last season, FIU (2-1) blitzed UMass (1-3) for a 42-10 lead at the half and never looked back.
The Panthers got 100-yard performances on the ground by Shawndarrius Phillips (117) and Napoleon Maxwell (101) and both finished with two touchdowns.
FIU battles the Hurricanes (2-1) next.
It was over before it started as Georgia (3-0) had their way with Middle Tennessee St (1-2) jumping out to a 42-7 lead going into to halftime.
Brent Stockstill was limited to just 138 yards passing with a touchdown and an interception.
The Blue Raiders will take a week off to prepare for FAU on Sept. 29.
In one sense, its a win for the Miners (0-3) to limit Tennessee (2-1) to just 24 points, but it doesn't help when you only total 134 yards against an SEC defense.
The Miners quest to end their 15-game losing streak has its best chance when they face New Mexico St(0-4) in a battle for the Silver Spade.
UTSA (0-3) might have felt better about this game after the Wildcats (2-1) struggled against South Dakota, but Kansas State built a 27-7 lead into halftime to all but finish off the Roadrunners.
Cordale Grundy and D.J. Gillins each threw touchdowns for UTSA.
The Roadrunners look for win number one against Texas St (1-2) next week in San Antonio.
A week after watching their lead disappear against Maine, the Hilltoppers (0-3) watched their upset bid slip away as they blew a second half lead to Louisville (2-1).
It started with a blocked kick with the Cardinals trailing 14-6. That led to a short field touchdown for Louisville. Then Western Kentucky was able to put a field goal through to make it 17-13.
The Cardinals responded with a Dae Williams touchdown run to give them their first lead at the 5:01 mark in the fourth quarter. The Hilltoppers had a chance to tie it as time expired, but Ryan Nuss saw his 51-yard field goal attempt sail wide.
Western Kentucky will hit the road again next week when they travel to Ball St (1-2).
