The Golden Gophers (1-0) took it to a struggling New Mexico St (0-2) team by going up 35-10 at the half and pitching a shutout in the second half.
Rodney Smith had 153 yards rushing, while Mohamed Ibrahim had 101 yards on nine carries, including a 74-run that did not find the endzone.
Minnesota hosts Fresno St(1-0) next after the Bulldogs dropped 79 on Idaho.
This one was fairly matched, but a 17-3 second quarter that gave Northwestern (1-0) a 31-17 lead, proved too much for the Boilermakers (0-1) to overcome. Jeremy Larkin led the way for the Wildcats with his 143 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Rondale Moore was a yard machine for Purdue, hauling in 11 catches for 109 yards and a score to go with a 76-yard touchdown run.
The other key stat was turnovers which favored Northwestern 3-0, all interceptions thrown by Elijah Sindelar.
Northwestern will have a battle of the brains on the gridiron next week against Duke (1-0), while Purdue welcomes the greatest university of all-time, Eastern Michigan (1-0).
The Hilltopppers (0-1) were introduced to Heisman hopeful Jonathan Taylor, who ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns to propel the Badgers (1-0) to a 34-3 romp. Western Kentucky as a team finished with 124 yards rushing. Alex Hornibrook threw for 257 yards and two touchdowns.
Wisconsin welcomes New Mexico (1-0) next.
It was supposed to be a quick and easy day for Michigan St(1-0), but Utah St (0-1) came in with other ideas. The Aggies marched down the field on the first drive of the game and finished it off with a Jordan Love touchdown run. The Spartans responded with 13 unanswered, before the two teams traded touchdowns to bring it to 20-14 at the half.
Michigan St scored on the first drive of the second half and looked to be pulling away, but a field goal and a pick six Gaje Ferguson brought the Aggies to within three. Sparty added a field goal to push the lead to six, but Love drove the Aggies 75 yards for the go-ahead score with 5:05 left.
MSU came right back on a Connor Heyward 13-yard run, but missed the two point conversion to leave the game at 38-31.
Utah St was able to get down to the MSU 46, but Joe Bachie picked off Love to thwart the upset.
It would be the first of many close calls for the Big Ten in Week 1.
Sparty travels to Arizona St(1-0) to take on Herm Edwards and the Sun Devils.
Brandon Wimbush looked nearly unstoppable in the first half leading Notre Dame (1-0) to a 21-10 lead at the half. The only reason it was that close was because Ambry Thomas returned a kickoff 99-yards for the Wolverines (0-1) only touchdown of the half.
The Michigan defense tightened, but so did the Irish defense until scored with 2:18 left in the game. They could have had more to work with, but elected to huddle instead of running a hurry up offense. They held Notre Dame to get the ball back with 1:40, but Jerry Tillery ended the Wolverines comeback with a strip sack that was recovered by Te'Von Coney.
The seat keeps getting hotter for Jim Harbaugh as Michigan is 9-9 in its last 18 games, and 1-6 against rival Michigan St, Ohio St, and Notre Dame. Oh and the Wolverines haven't won a road game against a ranked opponent since 2006.
Hopefully they can figure things out against Western Michigan (0-1), but recently, even MAC schools have caused some issues for the maize and blue.
No Urban Meyer, no problem. Dwyane Haskins is already haunting Michigan fans in their nightmares with his 313 yard, five touchdown performance. Throw in Mike Weber's 186 yards and three touchdowns and the Buckeyes (1-0) will be hard to stop offensively.
Oregon State (0-1) did expose some areas of concern in the defense. Artavis Pierce had 168 yards rushing including an 80-yard score.
Ohio State begins Big Ten play this week with Rutgers (1-0).
Another tough Saturday for this Sun Belt team. The Bobcats (0-1) amassed just 176 total yards despite three Rutgers (1-0) interceptions. One of those was a pick six by Kordell Rogers for the only points of the day for Texas St. The Scarlett Knights amassed 218 yards as a team on the ground and 423 total, but may have a long day this week against the Buckeyes.
11 years ago Appalachian St (0-1) then part of the FCS, pulled off the greatest upset in college football history by stunning number five Michigan at the Big House. Apparently Penn State (1-0) still felt confident inviting them to Happy Valley.
A back and forth affair that went into halftime tied at 10, it appeared the Nittany Lions had staved off the upset with 14 unanswered in the third. Then came a flurry of Mountaineer touchdowns. First a Zac Thomas pass to start the fourth, but Penn State answered with a big 46-yard pass to set up Miles Sanders from two yards out.
App St scored on its next possession, then recovered the onside kick and scored again to tie the game at 31. On their next possession the Mountaineers had to punt, but pinned Penn St deep in their own territory, then benefited from a measly 36-yard punt. It took just four plays including three Jalin Moore runs, capped by a 16-yard touchdown and the lead.
Michael Rubino gave the Nittany Lions a 52-yard kickoff return to set up Penn State inside App St territory. With 42 seconds remaining, Trace McSorely connected with KJ Hamler for the game tying 15-yard score. The Mountaineers attempted a 56-yard field goal at the end of regulation that missed and sent the game to overtime.
Sanders took over for Penn State in OT as he carried the ball four times for the 25 yards needed to find the end zone. After picking up a fourth and one, App St looked poised to tie things up, but Amani Oruwariye picked off Thomas in the end zone to avoid the upset.

Penn State will travel to Pittsburgh (1-0) in a prime time game against the Panthers.
The Golden Flashes (1-0) got off to a great start against Illinois (1-0) pulling out to a 17-3 going into halftime, but the Fighting Illini pulled it together and rallied with 28 points in the second half. The turning point came when Kent State threw an interception that led to a touchdown and then went for it on fourth down and missed, that also led to points for Illinois.
Woody Barrett led Kent State down the field for an eight play 75-yard series that put the Golden Flashes on top once again, but they couldn't answer the next two scores by Illinois.A.J. Bush led the Illini with 190 yards passing and 139 yards running.
Lovie Smith will look to build some momentum with a visit from Western Illinois (0-1).
Of all the teams that seemed prone for a trap game, it appeared to be Iowa (1-0) against a Northern Illinois (0-1) team that shut down Nebraska last year. This year the Huskies got that same strong defense in the first half, trailing just 3-0, but the Hawkeyes made sure the NIU offense was nowhere to be found. NIU totaled just 211 yards and one fourth quarter touchdown that came when they already trailed 34-0.Toren Young led the way for Iowa with 84 yards and a touchdown on eight carries.
They'll battle for the Cy-Hawk Trophy at home against Iowa St (0-0). The Hawkeyes have won the last three meetings and lead the series 43-22 all-time.
The Golden Panthers (0-1) were outscored 28-14 in the first half and it was enough to lead the Hoosiers (1-0) to a 38-28 win. A big reason for the success was the +2 turnover margin for Indiana.
Peyton Ramsey led the way with 156 yards passing and three touchdowns for Indiana as well as 36 yards on the ground.
Indiana will take on Virginia (1-0) next.
Emotions were high in this game as it started with Maryland (1-0) lining up with just ten players to leave a space for Jordan McNair, who died during camp this summer. In a class move the Longhorns (0-1) declined the penalty for delay of game and then things got crazy from there.
Texas was favored thanks in part to Maryland coach D.J. Durkin currently being suspended pending an investigation into the culture at Maryland after the death of McNair. Pundits must have had a short memory though as just last year, an outgunned Terrapin team knocked off the Longhorns.
The two teams slugged it out 24-22 halftime score in favor of Maryland before weather delayed the game. Texas would score a touchdown in the third to make it 29-24, but Maryland scored the final 10 points of the game and the defense forced three turnovers on the Longhorns final drives.
Maryland will head to Bowling Green (0-1) this week.
The Scott Frost era will have to wait...and so might Akron for a paycheck.
Nebraska hosts former Big 12 foe Colorado (1-0) in the new Scott Frost debut.
