The Hokies tied the game on a Ryan Willis touchdown pass to Chris Cunningham with 7:15 left in the game, but Old Dominion answered with a 29-yard LaRussa touchdown and then Virginia Tech was stopped at the ODU 21 yard line on fourth down. A 40-yard touchdown run by Jeremy Cox would secure the upset by the 29.5 point underdog.
Old Dominion will face ECU (1-2) next.
With the offense sputtering, Western Kentucky (1-3) elected to go with back-up quarterback Steven Duncan, who rallied the Hilltoppers past the Cardinals (1-3).
Ball State had just pushed their lead to 13-7 when Duncan gave WKU its first lead of the game with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Mik'Quan Deane. Riley Neal led the Cardinals down for a response touchdown with 8:39 left in the game. Duncan and Deane were the go to connection once again as this time it was done for an 18-yard score to take the lead back.
Ball State elected to punt on their next drive, only for the Hilltoppers to hold the ball and eventually score for a more comfortable lead.
WKU opens CUSA play against Marshall (2-1) next week.
The Owls (2-2) had no answer for McKenzie Milton as he threw for three touchdowns and ran for another three to lead UCF (3-0) to its 15th straight win.
FAU trailed 21-17 going into halftime, but watched the Golden Knights score on their first three possessions of the second half. Chris Robison threw three picks including a pick-six late in the game.
Devin Singletary had a strong showing with 131 yards rushing and three touchdowns to lead the Owls.
FAU will regroup when they open CUSA play at Middle Tennessee St (1-2) next Saturday.
North Texas (4-0) continued their dominance as they ran their way to big win on the road against Liberty (1-2).
Loren Easly carried the ball 27 times for 177 yards and two scores to lead the way for the Mean Green. Mason Fine tossed two touchdowns in the victory.
The Mean Green host Louisiana Tech (2-1) next.
Jack Abraham threw for 428 yards and four touchdowns to help Southern Miss (2-1, 1-0 CUSA) light up the scoreboard against Rice (1-3, 0-1).
The Owls could only muster 262 total yards and turned the ball over twice. Austin Walter made the most of his six carries as he had 81 yards and a touchdown to lead Rice offensively. Aaron Cephus hauled in two touchdowns from Shawn Stankavage.
Southern Miss draws a tougher task on the road next as they head to No. 10 Auburn (3-1). Rice will travel to Wake Forest (2-2).
The Minutemen (2-3) jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back as they drubbed the Charlotte 49ers(2-2).
Chris Reynolds did have a big day for Charlotte as he tossed three touchdowns with his favorite target, Victor Tucker, hauling in eight catches for 130 yards.
The 49ers look to stay undefeated in conference play as they travel to UAB (2-1) next.
The Bulldogs (2-1) found themselves in a 24-7 hole at the half and weren't able to climb out against the LSU (4-0) defense.
J'Mar Smith threw for 330 yards with three touchdowns to lead the way for La Tech. The beneficiary of most of those was Adrian Hardy who hauled in ten catches, 181 yards, and two touchdowns.
The Bulldogs draw a tough task as they head to North Texas (4-0).
The Hurricanes (3-1) rolled out to a 31-0 lead before FIU (2-2) could find the end zone in the fourth quarter.
James Morgan had just 168 yards, 12 completions, and two touchdowns with C.J. Worton hauling in five of those passes for 123 yards and catching both scores. FIU was limited to just 17 yards rushing.
They'll welcome FCS Arkansas Pine Bluff (1-3) next.
Both teams were coming off an unexpected bye week thanks to Hurricane Florence, but it was the Thundering Herd (2-1) that looked slow out the gates as NCST (3-0) jumped out to a 23-7 advantage.
Marshall was limited to just 54 yards rushing while Isaiah Green had 270 yards passing with a touchdown, but threw two interceptions.
The Thundering Herd will open CUSA play with a trip to Western Kentucky (1-3).
UTSA (1-3) jumped out to a quick 17-7 lead, but had to fight off a late rally by Texas St (1-3).
It started well for the Roadrunners defense sacked and stripped Willie Jones III and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown on the opening drive. UTSA also got things going right away offensively as they got a touchdown pass from Cordale Grundy to Tykee Ogle-Kellogg to go up 14-0. Texas State would score a touchdown, but would also throw two picks and miss a field goal.
The Bobcats cut the lead to 17-14 when new QB Tyler Vitt found Keenan Brown for a 21-yard score. The Roadrunners responded with a field goal and then shocked Texas State by recovering an onside kick. That led to another field goal to make it 23-14.
Vitt threw his second touchdown of the game with 5:08 to go and the Bobcats were ready to receive the ball with just under two minutes. They would have terrible starting position as Yannis Routsas pinned the Bobcats at the 2-yard line and it would lead to a UTSA safety to secure the Roadrunners first win of the year.
UTSA looks to make it two in a row and will open CUSA play against the longest losing streak in college football, UTEP (0-4).
In a battle of someone has to win, the Battle of I-10 came down to three UTEP (0-4) turnovers as New Mexico St (1-4) won the Silver Spade and Brass Spittoon for the second straight year.
It started poorly for the Miners as their first punt was blocked and returned for a touchdown. The responded quickly though when Kai Locksley punched it in from one yard out. The two teams traded field goals before three straight drives that ended with fumbles, with the last one by UTEP proving to be the most costly when Malik Demby returned it right before the half.
UTEP once again scored on their first drive of the half as Locksley connected with Terry Juniel for a 76-yard score. The Miners had a chance to take their first lead, but Jason Filley missed a 44-yard field goal. The Aggies covered the short field quickly as Josh Adkins connected with Royce Caldwell for a 53-yard touchdown.
The two teams traded field goals before Locksley was picked off on the Miners final drive of the game.
UTEP's losing streak is now at 16 games and they hope to erase that on the road against UTSA (1-3).
