PAC 12 Recap Week 3

If anybody understands the Big Ten's pain its the PAC 12. This week two ranked teams lost to unranked opponents and they went 1-3 against the Mountain West.

This PAC 12 showdown featured two of the better defenses in the conference, but it was costly mistakes by Utah (2-1, 0-1 PAC 12) that allowed Washington (2-1, 1-0) to walk away with the victory.
In the first half, the Huskies got rushing touchdowns from Myles Gaskin and Jake Browning, while Zack Moss ran one in for the Utes to make it 14-7 at the half. The second half was one to forget for Utah's offense.
On their first drive they fumbled to set up a Browning touchdown pass to Ty Jones. Then the Utes fumbled again and Taylor Rapp recovered his second fumble of the day. After a punt, Utah got a big break when Browning threw a misguided pass to Pita Tonga who looked like he was going to return it for a touchdown, but the 300 lb. tackle fumbled the ball out of bounds at the 11.
Utah went for it on fourth down and missed. They would come up short on their next two drives to hand the Huskies the win.
Gaskin had the big day for both parties, finishing with 143 yards on 30 carries and a touchdown.
Utah will take on Washington State on Sept. 29 while the Huskies get the recently stunned Sun Devils (2-1) next Saturday.

Arizona State (2-1) and San Diego St (2-1) had one of the more bizarre finishes of the day, with Herm Edwards suffering his first loss as a college coach.
In the final moments the Aztecs held onto a 28-14 lead. The Sun Devils scored on a Manny Wilkins touchdown, but failed to recover the onside kick. San Diego State just had to run the clock out, but Chase Jasmin was stripped and ASU recovered the fumble to stay alive. There is some debate about whether Jasmin was down, but officials gave the ball to the Sun Devils.
ASU moved the ball out to the fifty where Wilkins threw a high arcing pass on fourth and ten that found the arms of Frank Darby and it looked as though he made a ridiculous catch despite taking a blow to the head. While reviewing for targeting, the officials upheld the targeting call, but overturned the catch, which from the views I saw, was a controversial call as well.
Because of the penalty the Sun Devils got one last heave to the end zone, but it was knocked down and the Aztecs secured the win.

The Sun Devils now head to Washington to face the Huskies (2-1).

The Beavers (1-2) had a one final shot at the end of the game to knock off Nevada (2-1), but couldn't execute to avoid the upset.
Both teams got off to a fast start as they raced to a 30-21 halftime score. The two big moments came on Beaver turnovers. Conor Blount was picked off to give Nevada a short field and extend its lead to 16-7. Two drives later Blount was sacked and stripped by Asauni Rufus and Malik Reed recovered in the end zone that made it 30-7 at that point.
The Beavers would rally at that point, bringing it to a 30-28 score with 11:40 left in the game, but Ty Gangi led the Wolfpack right down the field for a score. Oregon State would miss a field goal, but forced an interception and used the short field to score a touchdown to make it 37-35.
The Beavers got the ball back and had a chance to win the game, but Jordan Choukair missed a 34-yard field goal as time expired.

Oregon State will face Arizona (1-2) next.

The Bruins get a break before opening PAC 12 play in Colorado (3-0).
