Last year Eastern Michigan (2-0) stunned Rutgers for their first win against a Big Ten school. This year they added to the resume with a win at Purdue (0-2).
Tyler Wiegers, a graduate transfer from Iowa, gave the Eagles a solid performance with 312 yards and a touchdown going 20-28. The Eagles defense was gashed for 341 yards on the ground, but was a bend not break defense to keep Purdue out of the endzone with two big turnovers.
The fourth quarter was a wild finish with EMU taking the lead on Breck Turner 9-yard touchdown run. Purdue answered almost immediately with a 45-yard touchdown run by D.J. Knox. Eastern responded with an interception, but Purdue missed a 38-yard field goal that would've forced the Eagles to score a touchdown.
The Boilermakers had a chance to finish the game, but Cornel Jones gave Wiegers an extra shove on the ground after sacking him and forcing a fumble. That penalty, along with a pass interference, got the Eagles down to the 7-yard line where freshman kicker Chad Ryland knocked through the game winning field goal.
The Eagles open MAC play against Buffalo (2-0) next week.
The Owls (0-2) rallied in the fourth quarter with a blocked punt in the endzone and a two-point conversion (a reverse that ended up turning into a pass and a one handed grab) to tie the game. The Bulls (2-0) responded with an eight play 58-yard drive that retook the lead. Frank Nutile brought the Owls right back with his third touchdown of the day, a three yard pass to Branden Mack.
Buffalo bled the clock and got a big play on a third and ten when Tyree Jackson threw his third touchdown of the day, a 29-yard connection with Anthony Johnson to take a 36-29 lead. Temple got the ball to near midfield with :55 seconds left, but Nutile was sacked and stripped with the Bulls recovering for the win.
Buffalo welcomes EMU (2-0) for their MAC opener.
Kent State (1-1) nearly upset Illinois, Howard (0-2) nearly stunned Ohio, so both were aware of what other could do. The Golden Flashes were able to contain Caylin Newton to just 200 total yards. Justin Rankin and Jo-El Shaw each carried the ball with the former running for 147 yards and a score and the latter going for 105 yards and three scores to lead Kent St.
Up Next for the Golden Flashes is a trip to No. 11 Penn St (2-0).
One reason Akron (1-0) needs the money from the game they didn't play against Nebraska is to pay for the paid win they had against Morgan St (0-2).
Morgan St. was held to 192 total yards while Kato Nelson threw for three touchdowns and 232 yards to lead the Zips. Van Edwards Jr. led Akron on the ground with 109 yards and two scores.
Akron heads to Northwestern (1-1) next.
In their first meeting ever, the Fighting Irish (2-0) looked sloppy against Ball State (1-1).
The Cardinals forced three interceptions, but Ryan Neal also threw a pair of his own. Ball St made it a one score game with 1:30 left, but were unable to recover the onside kick.
The Cardinals will head next to Bloomington, to face the Hoosiers (2-0).
Kansas (1-1) entered the game with a 46-game road losing streak and lost in overtime to an FCS opponent to start the season, so Central Michigan (0-2) was really looking forward to stealing a win from another Power 5 school.
The Chippewa's instead turned the ball over six times and were limited to 280 yards.
They'll open MAC play next week at Northern Illinois (0-2) as both schools search for their first win.
The Huskies (0-2) were limited to just 228 total yards, which is 58 yards fewer than Tyler Huntley racked up through the air for the Utes (2-0).
Northern Illinois and Central Michigan (0-2) take a break from losing to Power 5 schools to open MAC play.
Hyped to welcome a Big Ten school to Northwest Ohio, the Falcons (0-2) took a 14-10 lead into halftime. Maryland (2-0) must have woken up from their mid-game nap as they outscored BGSU 35-0 in the second half.
The Terrapins ran for 444 yards and five touchdowns, while holding the Falcons to 158 total yards including 15 yards rushing.
