American Recap Week 4

It was a thriller in Dallas as it came down to a decision to go for two in overtime to decide Saturday's contest.
The first quarter only featured two drives as SMU (1-3, 1-0 American) kicked a field goal on a 14 play, 72-yard drive, that lasted 5:23. The Midshipmen (2-2, 1-1) followed by holding the ball for 11:21, using 18 plays to go 78 yards. It was capped in the second quarter with a Zach Abey 1-yard run. The rest of the first half was forgettable with Navy fumbling twice, SMU fumbling once, missing a field goal, and turning the ball over on downs. In the middle of that disappointment, William Brown was able to connect with Reggie Roberson Jr. for a go-ahead 20-yard touchdown to make it a 10-7 game at the end of the half.
The Midshipmen took the lead back when Garrett Lewis threw a 25-yard touchdown to Mychal Cooper with 6:38 in the third quarter. That was very short lived as Roberson returned the ensuing kick 98 yards for a touchdown. A Navy fumble set up the Mustangs at the 2-yard line and Brown hooked up with Myron Gailliard for the touchdown. It wasn't all good as the extra point was blocked and returned to make it a 23-16 game. Navy then tied the game up with 6:19 to play on a CJ Williams 52-yard score.
In overtime the Midshipmen scored on a third and goal from the 1-yard line when Lewis plunged across the goaline. SMU was able to convert a fourth and one and then scored on a Ben Hicks touchdown pass to James Proche. Instead of going for the tie, Sonny Dykes elected to go for his first win as head coach of the Mustangs. It turned out to be the right call as Hicks connected with Hunter Thedford to give SMU its first win of the year.

Win number two is within reach for the Mustangs as they welcome FCS Houston Baptist (1-3). Navy will travel to Colorado Springs for the first leg of the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy as they face Air Force (1-2) The Midshipmen last won the rivalry trophy in 2015 while the Falcons won last in 2016.

If you enjoyed poor passing performances than Thursday night was for you. Luke Skipper tossed three interceptions and was just 22-of-41 for 195 yards for Tulsa (1-3, 0-1 American). Anthony Russo was 7-of-20 for 112 yards and two interceptions  for Temple (2-2,1-0). And if you thought you could escape it on the NFL's Thursday Night Football game, you were wrong. Sam Darnold threw no touchdowns and two picks with just 169 yards on  15-of-31 passing for the Jets (1-2) while Tyrod Taylor started 4-of-14 for 19 yards and a concussion before giving way to Baker Mayfield as the Browns (1-1-1) won for the first time since 2016.
With all this poor quarterback play, someone had to benefit, and it turned out the Owls defense was ready to make the most out of the Tulsa offensive woes. In total Temple forced five turnovers and returned both an interception and a fumble for a touchdown.
Offensively Ryquell Armstead had 108 yards on 24 carries with a touchdown for the Owls, while Corey Taylor II had both touchdowns for the Golden Hurricane mixed in with his 23 carries and 96 yards.
Temple heads to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to face A.J. Dillon, Anthony Brown, and the Boston College Eagles (3-1).Tulsa will have a bye week before heading to Houston on Thursday, Oct. 4.

Ohio punted on its next drive and UC scored for the fourth time in the second half with a Michael Warren II 3-yard touchdown run. A failed two-point conversion made it 34-30. The Bobcats made it interesting though as they marched down to the UC 1-yard line. The defense stuffed A.J. Ouellette for a three-yard loss and then picked off Nathan Rourke to finish the win.
