It was 1894 when Akron (2-0) last beat a member of the Big Ten and they erased that history by stunning Northwestern (1-2) at Ryan Field.
The Zips trailed 21-3 going into the half, but used three defensive touchdowns to propel them past the Wildcats. Northwestern made it interesting with a late touchdown, but missed the two-point conversion and failed to recover the onside kick. Kato Nelson had 277 yards passing with two scores to lead the way offensively for the Zips.
Akron looks for another Power 5 victim in Ames, Iowa, when they travel to Iowa St.
Buffalo was trying to go 3-0 for the first time since 1983 when they played Division III, while the Eagles were known as the Hurons when they went 3-0 in 1989.
The Bulls (3-0, 1-0 MAC) would be the ones to break the streak as Tyree Jackson torched the defense for 325 yards and three touchdowns while completing 21-of-26. K.J. Osborn was his favorite target as he had seven catches for 188 yards and three touchdowns. Mike Glass III led Eastern (2-1, 0-1) with 353 yards and three total scores. His favorite target was Blake Banham who hauled in nine catches for 159 yards and a score.
Buffalo built a 14-0 lead when Glass connected with Arthur Jackson III for a 76-yard strike. That was quickly answered by the duo of Jackson and Osborn as they went one play for a 70-yard score. The Eagles answered with a 75-yard hook-up between Glass and Banham to bring EMU back to within seven.
Kevin Marks punched it for his second touchdown run of the day on the Bulls final drive, but EMU was able to use the final two minutes to score on a 1-yard touchdown run by Shaq Vann to cap a wild first half.
The second half was full of punts (5), fumbles (2), and turnover on downs (2). The definitive score came with 12 minutes in the third when Jackson found Osborn for a 75-yard score to make it 35-21. EMU made it interesting with a late touchdown, but the Bulls recovered the onside kick with 40 seconds left to win.
EMU has a tough task out west as they face a San Diego St (2-1) team that just upset No. 23 Arizona St. Buffalo looks to make it another MAC win against a Big Ten school when they travel to Rutgers (1-2).
The Huskies (1-2, 1-0 MAC) and Chippewa's (0-3, 0-1) were looking for win number one on Saturday and it was a 14-3 halftime lead by Northern Illinois that proved to be the difference.
Offense was at a premium as CMU actually outgained NIU 322-284, but two turnovers by the Chips proved costly. The big play came when Vinny Labus picked off Tommy Lazzaro on the NIU-12 with 17 seconds remaining.
Marcus Childers threw for threw touchdowns despite completing only 11 passes to lead the Huskies. Lazzaro led the way for CMU with a touchdown both passing and rushing.
CMU welcomes a Maine (2-0) squad that knocked an FBS opponent already in Western Kentucky. Northern Illinois looks to add to the misery of Florida St (1-2).
The Falcons (1-2) were in trouble, trailing 35-34 heading into the fourth quarter, but were able to find the end zone and avoid the upset at the hands of the Colonels (1-2).
Dakota Allen led EKU down the field with a chance to tie, but they were stopped at the BGSU-15. Jarret Doege threw for 258 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another score to lead Bowling Green. Andrew Clair had 90 yards on 25 carries with a score.
Bowling Green opens MAC play when they welcome Miami (0-3).
Gas Ragland was limited to 108 yards passing and the Redhawks (0-3) had just 199 total yards.
The Golden Gophers (3-0) only had 295 of offense themselves, but held the ball for over 34 minutes.
Miami head to Bowling Green (1-2) next.
Western Michigan (1-2) made sure to get their monies worth against FCS punching bag Delaware St (0-3).
Jon Wassink threw for 286 yards and two scores while the Broncos defense held the Hornets to 123 total yards and forced two turnovers. The WMU special teams also returned two punts for touchdowns.
The Broncos head to Georgia St (1-2) next.
The Cardinals (1-2) were hoping to put pressure on another Power 5 Indiana school, but the Hoosiers (3-0) coasted to an easy 38-10 win.
James Gilbert had 89 yards and had Ball State's only touchdown. Indiana outscored the Cardinals 35-7 after the first quarter.
Ball State looks to keep Western Kentucky (0-3) winless when they come to Muncie, on Saturday.
The Nittany Lions (3-0) held Kent State (1-2) to just 221 yards of total offense in a rout of the Golden Flashes.
Kent State matched the opening score by Penn State, but would be outscored 56-3 from that point on.
The Golden Flashes will travel to Ole Miss (2-1) were they can both talk about how they had a top 25 team on the ropes for all of five minutes.
Toledo (1-1) was ready to knock off another ACC opponent, but the Hurricanes were not ready to be added to that list as they scored 14 in each of the final three quarters.
Mitchell Guadagni had 222 yards passing with two scores to lead the way for the Rockets.
They'll welcome Nevada (2-1) next to the Glass Bowl.
The game was moved to Nashville, because of Hurricane Florence, but the outcome would've likely been the same in Charlottesville.
Virginia (2-1) rolled to a 38-21 halftime lead to hold off the upset minded Bobcats (1-1). Nathan Rourke had 246 yards passing and two touchdowns while Maleek Irons added two rushing touchdowns. Papi White had six catches for 131 yards and a score.
Ohio will head across state next to take on Cincinnati (3-0).
