This week featured some stunning achievements. Kentucky (2-0) beat Florida (1-1) for the first time in my life (31 years to be exact). Kansas (1-1) won a road game for the first time in 46 tries and beat an FBS opponent (Central Michigan, 0-2) for the first time since stunning Texas in November of 2016. That game also helped them beat Texas for the first time in over 75 years.
Eastern Michigan (2-0) beat Purdue (0-2) with a last second field goal for the Eagles second straight year with a win over a Big Ten opponent after being previously winless. And the Tar Heels (0-2) just can't buy a win as they were drubbed by an ECU (1-1) team that lost FCS foe NCAT last week. However, none of those amount to the failure that was Western Kentucky (0-2) blowing a 21-0 lead to FCS opponent Maine (2-0).
The Hilltoppers came out like gangbusters scoring on their opening drive and picking off Chris Ferguson's third attempt of the game and returning it for six. Drew Eckels second touchdown pass of the quarter made it 21-0.
Then the rest of the game happened. Maine outscored WKU 14-0 the rest of the first half, then started the second half by going for it on fourth and one from their own 34. They came up short, but the defense came through with a sack, fumble, scoop and score to tie the game at 21.
In what can only be explained as a bad game of Truth or Dare, WKU went for it on fourth and 1 from their own 15, then missed to set up a one play scoring drive for the Black Bears that gave them their first lead of the game.
Maine would add a field goal before Eckels tossed his third touchdown, a 75-yard hookup to Garland LaFrance. In a feeling that Wolverine fans can understand, WKU lined up for the game tying field goal with 47 seconds left, only for the Black Bears to block it and bury the Hilltoppers to cap another wild week in college football.
