Utah (1-0) was the only PAC 12 team to win a bowl game last season, so it was important for them to help the conference to off to a good start on Thursday. Weber State (0-1) had other ideas as they stunned the Utes early by taking a 10-7 lead into the second quarter.
Then reality kicked in and the Wildcats finished with just 59 total yards and did not score again. Tyler Huntley tossed four touchdowns, one of them going to Zack Moss. who also ran for 150 yards and a score on 16 carries.
Up next is Northern Illinois (0-1) who had some tough sledding against Iowa in Week 1.
Another slow start, but another strong finish. Stanford (1-0) led just 9-7 going into halftime before J.J. Arcega-Whiteside went nuclear. The Cardinal receiver finished the game with 226 yards receiving and three touchdowns on just six catches. He would finish with the second most receiving yards in Week 1 behind Western Michigan's D'Wayne Eskridge (240).
Concerning was Heisman candidate Bryce Love's 18 carry, 29 yard performance to go with 18 yards receiving and no touchdowns.
Stanford will get a very early rematch of the PAC 12 title game, which the lost to USC (1-0) 34-31.
Perhaps something was just in the air, as USC (1-0) got more than they bargained for from UNLV (0-1) who only trailed the Trojans 19-14 going into the half. It stayed that way through three quarters as both teams traded punts on their first two possessions of the second half.
Then a light switch kicked on as the first play of the fourth was a J.T. Daniels to Amon-Ra St. Brown connection for a 43-yard score. The Rebels followed with another punt and the Trojans added another touchdown.
USC would end up scoring on its final four possessions to stave off the upset minded Rebels.
They'll head to Stanford (1-0) next week.
In what was deemed a must win for Washington (0-1) and the PAC 12, the Huskies were stymied by the Auburn (1-0) defense and were there own worst enemy at times. The two teams slugged their way to a 15-13 halftime score in favor of Auburn.
In the third quarter each team missed a field goal and Jake Browning fumbled with the Huskies knocking on the door to take the lead.
Eventually Washington got the go-ahead field goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but the Tigers responded two drives later with a 10-yard touchdown run from JaTarvious Whitlow. A failed two-point conversion left it at 21-16.
Washington was able to get as close as the Auburn 39 before Browning was sacked on fourth down and the Tigers were able to run out the clock.
Washington will look to rebound against North Dakota (1-0).
Cal (1-0) controlled the game for the first three quarters, but the North Carolina (0-1) put up a fight at the end, that proved too little too late. The Bears took advantage of three Nathan Elliott interceptions, including a pick-six and another that set up a short 23-yard drive that lead to a score.
Up 24-3, the Tar Heels scored on their final two drives to make things appear much closer, but were unable to recover the onside kick. Cal was able to only muster 279 total yards including 119 yards in the air with three different quarterbacks.
The Bears take on BYU (1-0) next. The Cougars have already claimed victory over a PAC 12 opponent this season.
Kevin Sumlin's tenure at Arizona (0-1) got off to a rough start after they surrendered 21 unanswered points in the third quarter to drop the season opener to BYU (1-0).
Khalil Tate struggled, connecting with just 17 of his 34 attempts for 197 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 14 yards and a score. J.J. Taylor rushed for 85 yards and a score for the Wildcats. They had no answer for Squally Canada who led BYU with 98 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
Arizona faces a Houston (1-0) squad that had early troubles with Rice before pulling away late.
The Chip Kelly era also got off to a dubious start as the Cincinnati Bearcats (1-0) crashed the party and blanked the Bruins (0-1) in the final quarter.
UCLA got off to a hot start going up 10-0 after the first, but Cincinnati returned the favor with 17 unanswered in the second quarter. The Bruins tied the game on a Kazmeir Allen 74-yard touchdown run on their first possession of the second half.
The big blow came in the fourth quarter when Dorian Thomas-Robinson was stripped and the Bruins were forced to fall on the ball in the endzone for a safety. That made Kelly elect to go for it on fourth and one from their own-36 with 5:46 left to go, but the Bearcats defense held. That set up a short field and a touchdown to put the game out of reach.
Things will only get worse before getting better as the Bruins face Oklahoma (1-0) next.
No one expected Jonathan Smith's debut to end with a victory, but sitting through a lengthy delay and watching the Urban Meyerless Buckeyes (1-0) drop an angry 77 was not ideal. It was especially scary for starter Jake Luton, who left the game with after going through concussion protocol, a year after suffering a season ending spinal injury.
The Beavers (1-0) never quit and got some big plays from Artavis Pierce, who ran for an 80-yard score, as well as a 78-yard scamper to the endzone.
Despite trailing 10-7 after one quarter, the Mario Cristobal era got itself on the right track by dropping 30 in the second quarter to help Oregon (1-0) cruise to a 58-24 victory.
Justin Herbert tossed five touchdowns for 281 yards and a collection of Ducks' running backs amassed 212 yards on the ground.
Oregon will try and top Nevada's 72 point performance they piled up on Portland St (0-1) as the Vikings will travel to Eugene.
Ten years out of coaching, Herm Edwards didn't show any rust as his Sun Devils (1-0) routed the Roadrunners (0-1). Manny Wilkins threw four touchdowns with two of those going to N'Keal Harry, who also had 140 yards receiving. Eno Benjamin ran for 131 yards and a score to lead the ground game. The Arizona St defense held UTSA scoreless until the 6:03 mark in the fourth quarter.
The Sun Devils will welcome Michigan St (1-0) to Tempe, after the Spartans needed to rally against Utah St last week.
Colorado (1-0) dropped the most points against their instate rival since 1996 and held K.J Carta-Samuels to just 176 yards after his 537 yard, 5 touchdown performance in Hawai'i.
Steven Montez had the big day through the air with 338 yards and four touchdowns, completing 22-of-25 attempts. A majority of that went to Laviska Shenault Jr., who finished with 211 yards and a score. The Rams (0-2) amassed just 284 yards of total offense compared to the Buffaloes 596.
Colorado renews its rivalry with former Big 12 opponent Nebraska (0-0), who had their home opener against Akron canceled due to weather.
Gardner Minshew threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns to help lead Washington State (1-0) on the road against Wyoming (1-1).
The Cougars pass defense held Josh Allen's replacement, Tyler Vander Waal, to just 67 yards in 20 attempts with one interception.
Washington State should have no trouble with San Jose St (0-1) who dropped its opener to UC Davis.
