The Cornhuskers (0-2) were without quarterback Adrian Martinez and fell to 0-2 for the first time since 1957. Oh, and they're also out $1.15 million dollars.
That's what they paid Troy (2-1) to head up to Lincoln, Nebraska for what should have been the first win on Scott Frost's Nebraska coaching resume. Instead B.J. Smith ran for two touchdowns including a 26-yard run that put the Trojans up 24-13 with 6:45 left in the game. Cedarius Rookard also returned a punt for a touchdown that helped give Troy a 17-7 lead at the half.
Andrew Bunch took the Cornhuskers down to score with 2:55 remaining, but Nebraska missed on the two-point conversion to make it 24-19. Nebraska held and got the ball back, but Bunch was picked off by Will Sunderland to secure the win for Troy. It was Nebraska's third turnover of the game.
Last year Troy ran away with a $900,000 paycheck they took from beating LSU 24-21.
The Trojans take on ULM (2-1) next on the road.
The Warhawks (2-1) were blanked in the second half and Texas A&M (2-1) cruised to an easy win.
Caleb Evans threw for 225 yards and a score in the losing effort.
ULM welcomes Troy (2-1) next.
Willie Jones III had Texas St (1-2, 0-1 Sun Belt) ahead 31-16 thanks to his three total touchdowns, but the Jaguars (1-2, 1-0) dropped 25 unanswered including 18 in the fourth quarter to steal the win.
The rally started with a Jalen Thompson 55-yard interception return and then South Alabama added a field goal to bring the game within one score.
The Jaguars took the lead with 2:02 left in the game when Jordan McCray hauled in a 23-yard touchdown from Evan Orth. USA added a two-point conversion to go ahead by three. Jones was picked off on the final drive for Texas St and the Jaguars elected to throw on a 4th and goal from the 18 with 33 seconds left. That turned into the second touchdown pass of the day for Orth as the Jaguars closed out a 41-31 win.
South Alabama heads to Memphis (2-1) while Texas St hopes to feast on UTSA (0-3) in San Antonio.
The game was not only moved to Wednesday afternoon, but also from Myrtle Beach, SC, to Buies Creek, NC, due to Hurricane Florence. Also because of the changes, it was free entry.
Coastal Carolina (2-1) was unfazed by the change as they totaled 574 yards with four passing touchdowns and four rushing touchdowns. Kilton Anderson threw for three touchdowns and had 269 total yards. Torrance Marable found the endzone twice on the ground for the Chanticleers to hand the Camels (2-1) their first loss of the year.
Coastal Carolina will open Sun Belt play next week with a trip to Louisiana Lafayette.
The Ragin' Cajuns (1-1) were limited to 65 yards on the ground and watch Nick Fitzgerald run all over them to lead the Bulldogs (3-0). to victory.
Andre Nunez had 224 yards with a touchdown passing for Louisiana in the loss.
The Ragin' Cajuns face Coastal Carolina (2-1) next.
Tulsa (1-2) probably thought they had enough time to overcome a safety that made it 29-20 , but the Red Wolves (2-1) held the ball to run out the final 7:56 of the game.
Justice Hansen had 191 yards passing and 80 yards rushing with a touchdown to lead the Red Wolves offense. Along with the safety the Red Wolves defense also had a pick-six and forced three total turnovers.
Arkansas St welcomes UNLV (2-1) next.
The Eagles (2-1) finished with just 143 total yards and watched Clemson (3-0) go on a 24-0 run after a scoreless first quarter.
Georgia Southern will get the week off to prepare for Arkansas St on Sept. 29.
The Tigers (2-1) outgained the Panthers (1-2) 679-312 and Memphis took a 38-10 lead into halftime.
Somehow Georgia St managed to remove the good feeling they had after scoring a pick six in the final two minutes of the game by missing the PAT.
Georgia St welcomes Western Michigan next.
