American Recap Week 3

Even with two games canceled against Power 5 opponents because of Hurricane Florence, the American Athletic Conference still managed to score two wins against the Big Ten this week.

Blake Barnett threw for 411 yards and two touchdowns to lead a comeback against Illinois (2-1) at Soldier Field in Chicago on Saturday.
The Bulls (3-0) found themselves in a 19-7 hole heading into the fourth quarter. Barnett found Darnell Salomon for a 19-yard score to bring South Florida within five. Two drives later they added a field goal and Barnett found Salomon again, this time for a 50-yard strike. A two-point conversion made it 25-19. Illinois had a final heave at the endzone from 25 yards out, but M.J. Rivers II had his pass sail out of the back of the endzone to seal the win for USF.
The Bulls welcome an ECU (1-1) team that was one of the teams whose game was canceled due to Hurricane Florence.

Temple (1-2) was likely an underdog after their loss to Villanova and Maryland's (2-1) win over Texas, but it was the Owls who were the dominant force on Saturday.
Temple limited Maryland to just 195 yards of total offense and two turnovers. The Terrapins two touchdowns came on a punt blocked touchdown and a interception returned for a score.
Ryquell Armstead had 118 yards on 26 carries while Freddie Johnson hauled in three catches for 86 yards and a score to lead the way for the Owls.
Temple opens AAC play when they host Tulsa (1-2) next Thursday.

On Friday, Brady White tossed five touchdowns, but was out-shined by Darrell Henderson who ran for 233 yards and two scores on just 14 carries to lead Memphis (2-1) to a big win over Georgia St (1-2).
The Tigers outgained the Panthers 679-312. Memphis took a 38-10 lead into halftime.

What a finish in East Hartford, Connecticut, as the Huskies (1-2) secured their first win by surviving FCS Rhode Island (2-1).
David Pindell led the way for UConn with four passing touchdowns and two rushing scores for 445 total yards, but JaJaun Lawson matched him with four passing scores and two running TDs of his own to keep the Rams close.
Kevin Mensah ran in for a 22-yard score with 57 seconds left to put the Huskies on top. The Rams got within 16 yards of the endzone, but Lawson was sacked by Eli Thomas to secure the win for UConn.
The Huskies head to New York for a game with Syracuse (3-0).

Navy (2-1) ran for 484 yards and six team touchdowns to lead a route of Lehigh (1-2).
Malcolm Perry had 223 yards and three scores by himself to lead the way for the Midshipmen. Navy took a 34-7 lead into the half.
Navy will be the first AAC opponent for SMU (0-3) in Dallas next week.

The Bearcats (3-0) have almost matched their win total from last year (4) after a drubbing of Alabama A&M(1-2).
UC outgained Alabama A&M 741-182 and ran out to a 42-0 lead at the half. Desmond Ridder was 9-of-10 for 199 yards and three touchdowns while adding another score on the ground. Tavion Thomas had 18 carries for 141 yards and two touchdowns while Charles McClelland added 16 carries for 121 yards and one score.
The Bearcats will welcome the Ohio Bobcats (1-1) to Cincinnati next Saturday.

SMU (0-3) looked to go into halftime at the very least down by seven, but Ben Hicks was picked off by Josh Metellusl who ran back the final play of the first half 73 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-7 Wolverines (2-1).
The Mustangs had no answer for the Shea Patterson to Donvan Peoples-Jones connection as the duo combined for three scores, including two in the second half. James Proche had a big day for SMU with 11 catches for 166 yards and two scores.
SMU welcomes the option attack of Navy (2-1) next.

Tulane (1-2) attempted a furious comeback, but the Blazers (2-1) were able to hold off the Green Wave.
Down 21-7 at the half, Jonathan Banks connected with Darnell Mooney for touchdowns on the Green Wave's first two possessions of the second half. Tulane tied it with a field goal, but the Blazers drove 93 yards to answer with the go ahead touchdown with 2:19 left.
The Green Wave fumbled on their next drive, but held UAB to get the ball back with 53 seconds. Tulane marched to the UAB 38, but Jonathan Banks was sacked by Kylen Binn to end the game.

Tulane will ask for mercy next week as they head to Columbus to face the Buckeyes (3-0) in Urban Meyer's return from suspension.

Deriq King threw for five touchdowns and 431 yards with another rushing touchdown, but Alan Bowman dropped 605 yards on the Houston (2-1) defense along with five touchdowns of his own.
The Red Raiders (2-1) scored at least 14 points in every quarter to outpace a Houston team that would have needed 11 Ed Olivers to contain Texas Tech.
Marquez Stevenson hauled in nine catches for 177 yards and two touchdowns, including a 79-yard score. Keith Corbin had 103 yards and two scores receiving for the Cougars as well. The Red Raiders' Antoine Wesley led everyone with 261 yards and three scores.
Houston looks to regroup against Texas Southern (1-2) next Saturday.

Tulsa (1-2) probably thought they had enough time to overcome a safety that made it 29-20 , but the Red Wolves (2-1) held the ball to run out the final 7:56 of the game.
Shamari Brooks had 115 yards rushing for the Golden Hurricane. Luke Skipper threw for 172 yards and a touchdown, but had a costly pick-six.
Tulsa will travel to Temple (1-2) next Thursday.
