The Cal Bears (2-0) fended off a late rally by BYU (1-1) to avoid being the Cougars second PAC 12 victim this season.
The first half ended in a defensive 7-3 struggle, but Chase Garbers got the Bears on the board in a hurry when he connected with Kanawai Noa for a 52-yard score. Cal would give that touchdown right back on its next drive as BYU recovered a fumble and returned it to the house.
Brandon McIlwain extended the lead to 21-10 with a 2-yard score, but after a series of Tanner Magnum interceptions, the senior QB made things interesting. BYU went 73 yards in 13 plays capped by a Magnum touchdown pass to Brayden El-Bakri.
After the two-point conversion the Cougars elected for an onside kick, but failed to recover and Cal ran out the clock for its second win by 7 points or less.
