With several chances for FCS teams to give FBS opponents a run for their money, it was the trap game known as Villanova vs Temple that brought Saturday's first upset.
The Wildcats (1-0) have just four all-time wins against FBS opponents and three of them are against Temple.Battling for the Mayor's Cup, the Owls (0-1) avoided upset in last year's meeting 16-13, but were not ready this time.
Leading 17-13 heading into the fourth quarter, the Owls defense didn't yield a single point to Villanova in the second and third quarter. Even when the Wildcats scored a touchdown, Temple special teams kept the game within reach with a blocked extra point to make it 19-17.
The Owls defense came up again and got a stop to get the ball back with under two minutes to go. It took just one play to complete the upset though as Frank Nutile threw his second interception of the game to give Villanova a happy short ride home in the battle for Philadelphia bragging rights.
