MAC Recap Week 4

Image result for rutgers buffalo bulls footballBuffalo 42-Rutgers 13
Buffalo (4-0) looked like they were the Power 5 team on Saturday as they dismantled Rutgers (1-3).
The Scarlet Knights have now lost to MAC schools in back-to-back seasons. The Bulls defense held Rutgers to 284 total yards.
Tyree Jackson threw three touchdowns and 263 yards with Anthony Johnson hauling in two catches for 101 yards and a score. Jaret Patterson ran for 104 yards on 14 carries with two scores to lead the Bulls rushing attack.
Buffalo welcomes an a tough task in Army (2-2) next.

The Rockets (2-1) were firing on all cylinders as they put up at least 14 points in every quarter to blow past Nevada (2-2).
The Wolfpack actually outgained Toledo 582-460, but the Rockets got two big special teams plays as they returned both a kickoff and a punt. Mitchell Guadagni tossed four touchdowns and ran for 131 yards and two scores. In the loss Toa Taua had 170 yards and three touchdowns on the ground while Kaleb Fossum hauled in 14 catches for 150 yards.
The Rockets head out west to face another Mountain West foe in Fresno St (2-1).

The final score doesn't represent how much the Redhawks (1-3, 1-0 MAC) dominated this game. Miami led 31-3 before the Falcons (1-3, 0-1) finally found the end zone in the fourth quarter.
Gus Ragland threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead the way for Miami. Alonzo Smith carried the ball 19 times for 164 yards.
For the Falcons they were limited to 85 yards rushing as a team and Jarrett Doege threw for two touchdowns.
Miami Continues MAC play at home against Western Michigan (2-2) while Bowling Green heads to Georgia Tech (1-3).

Western Michigan (2-2) did most of their heavy lifting in the third quarter as they scored 31 points in those two frames to blow by Georgia St (1-3).
Jon Wassink threw for three touchdowns with one of those going to Jayden Reed who also had seven catches for 101 yards. Jamauri Bogan and Levante Bellamy both ran for over 120 yards with Bogan finding the end zone once.
Western Michigan starts MAC play on the road at Miami (1-3).
Image result for maine central michigan footballCentral Michigan 17-Maine 5
Perhaps one of my favorite scores of the weekend, Central Michigan (1-3) survived a dismal performance to not be Maine's (2-1) second FCS victim of the year.
Tommy Lazzaro ran and passed for a score and accounted for 126 of the 177 yards the Chippewa's gained. Luckily the defense held the Black Bears to 265 total yards and were 5-of-18 on third and fourth down.
The road doesn't get easier for CMU as they head to No. 21 Michigan St (2-1).

Meeting for the first time since 1981, the Bobcats (1-2) looked like they had the Bearcats (4-0) right where they wanted them, but UC outscored Ohio 27-6 in the second half to rally.
UC needed just three plays to score on their opening drive of the second half when Desmond Ridder connected with Rashad Medaris for 77 yards. Ohio added a field goal, but had a costly fumble that led to a short touchdown on a 7-yard Ridder run. The Bobcats once again kicked a field goal, but the Bearcats responded with another TD, this time a Ridder 26-yard pass to Jayshon Jackson.
Ohio punted on its next drive and UC scored for the fourth time in the second half with a Michael Warren II 3-yard touchdown run. A failed two-point conversion made it 34-30. The Bobcats made it interesting though as they marched down to the UC 1-yard line. The defense stuffed A.J. Ouellette for a three-yard loss and then picked off Nathan Rourke to finish the win.

The Bobcats will welcome former MAC foe UMass (2-3) to Athens.

With the offense sputtering, Western Kentucky (1-3) elected to go with back-up quarterback Steven Duncan, who rallied the Hilltoppers past the Cardinals (1-3).
Ball State had just pushed their lead to 13-7 when Duncan gave WKU its first lead of the game with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Mik'Quan Deane. Riley Neal led the Cardinals down for a response touchdown with 8:39 left in the game. Duncan and Deane were the go to connection once again as this time it was done for an 18-yard score to take the lead back.
Ball State elected to punt on their next drive, only for the Hilltoppers to hold the ball and eventually score for a more comfortable lead.
Ball State hosts Kent State (1-3) in both teams MAC opener.

Image result for akron iowa st footballIowa St 26-Akron 13
Akron (2-1) trailed Iowa St (1-2) 17-10 at the half, but could only manage three points in the second half.
The Zips were bottled up for just 244 total yards with quarterback Kato Nelson amassing 209 of those yards. Nelson found Andre Williams for the only touchdown of the day for Akron.
The Zips will take the week off before starting MAC play against Miami on Oct. 6.

In a re-match of the 2013 Orange Bowl no one asked for, the Seminoles (2-2) found their mojo and held the Huskies (1-3) to just six yards rushing.
Marcus Childers threw for two scores and ran for another to lead the NIU offense. D.J. Brown had a 117 yards on seven catches with a touchdown.
The Huskies now resume MAC play at Eastern Michigan (2-2).

The Eagles (2-2) forced San Diego St (3-1) to have to make a 50-yard field goal with 1:16 in regulation to tie the game before the Aztecs eventually won.
The two teams were near mirror images of each other in the beginning. Both teams came up short on a fourth and one to open the game and then followed with field goals. San Diego State scored on consecutive drives after the Eagles fumbled, but before the half EMU would pick off Ryan Agnew to set up a Mike Glass III 2-yard touchdown run to make 17-10.
Eastern opened the second half with a Glass 37-yard touchdown pass to Arthur Jackson III. John Baron II would miss a 35-yard field goal for the Aztecs and EMU would later add a 24-yard field goal to go up 20-17 with 3:18 left. Baron would get a second chance after a bogus out of bounds call negated a big play for San Diego St. Baron was true from 50 yards out to send it into overtime.
It took just two plays for EMU to turn the ball over in overtime when Glass threw an interception. Baron would send the Aztecs home winners with a 38-yard field goal.
Eastern returns home to face NIU (1-3) next to open MAC play.
Image result for kent st ole missOle Miss 38-Kent St 17
Kent State (1-3) got within four points in the third quarter, but Ole Miss (3-1) would go on to score the final 17 points of the game to hold off an upset bid by the Golden Flashes.
Much like their effort against Illinois, Kent St was able to hang with the Power 5 school for the first half and most of the third quarter. Wide Receiver Kavious Price threw a touchdown while quarterback Woody Barrett had a rushing touchdown in the loss.
Kent St will head to Ball State (1-3) next.
