Each team committed three turnovers, but Virginia (4-2, 2-1 ACC) was able to overcome and upset Miami (5-2, 2-1).
The Hurricanes fell behind after Jordan Ellis scored on a 7-yard touchdown run and Brian Delaney knocked in two field goals in his first game for the Cavaliers. Miami did get two field goals to trail 13-6 at the half.
Delaney knocked through an insurance field goal to make it a two score game, which Virginia needed as Malik Rosier scrambled in for an 11-yard touchdown to make it 16-13 with 3:04 to play. The Cavaliers were all set to go up by six with 30 seconds left and give the Hurricanes a chance to at least tie, but a roughing the kicker penalty negated that opportunity.
Virginia now heads to Duke (5-1, 1-1) while Miami looks to regroup against Boston College (5-2, 2-1) on Friday Oct. 26.
In a game that featured a sideline clearing brawl, the Blue Devils (5-1, 1-1 ACC) proved to have more fight than the Yellow Jackets (3-4,1-3) on Saturday.
Daniel Jones threw three touchdowns while Deon Jackson ran for 98 yards and a score to lead Duke in the win. TaQuon Marshall threw for a score and Jerry Howard ran for the other Georgia Tech touchdown.
The Blue Devils host Virginia (4-2, 2-1) next while Georgia Tech takes a week off before heading to Virginia Tech (4-2, 3-0) on Thursday, Oct. 25.
Even without A.J. Dillon the Eagles (5-2, 2-1 ACC) still ran the ball all over Louisville (2-5, 0-4).
David Bailey ran for 112 yards and a score while Ben Glines carried the ball 17 times for 107 yards and a touchdown to lead Boston College. The Cardinals got three rushing scores from three different players, but they amassed only 217 total yards.
Boston College awaits Miami (5-2, 2-1) on Friday, Oct. 26. Louisville takes a week off to try and snap their four game losing streak when they host Wake Forest (3-3, 0-2).
Pitt (3-4) nearly made it five Top Ten teams that lost on Saturday, but were unable to pull the upset against the Fighting Irish (7-0).
The Panthers held a 7-6 leading going into the half, but that lead grew quickly when Maurice Ffrench ran back the opening kickoff of the second half 99 yards for a touchdown. Notre Dame finally got into the end zone late in the third quarter when Ian Book found Chase Claypool for a 16-yard touchdown, but they would miss the two-point conversion.
Pitt would leave plenty of chances to build on the lead, but Alex Kessman missed two field goals. That left the door open for the Irish as Book found Miles Boykin for the go ahead 35-yard touchdown. The next two Panthers drives would end with turnovers on downs as they couldn't rally for the upset.
Pitt awaits Duke on Oct. 27.
The Hokies (4-2, 3-0 ACC) rallied to stun the crowd in North Carolina as Virginia Tech scored with 19 seconds left to steal the win from the Tar Heels (1-4, 1-2).
UNC started on the wrong foot when they fumbled the kickoff to set up a Ryan Willis 33-yard touchdown run. The Tar Heels would rebound, but couldn't find the end zone, instead settling for three field goals in four attempts to take a 9-7 lead going into the half.
That problem ended on the first drive of the second half as UNC scored on a Nathan Elliott touchdown pass. That awoke the Hokies as Willis found Sean Savoy for a 13-yard touchdown. The Tar Heals touchdown woes continued as their next drives ended in a missed field goal, made field goal, and a fumble. That turnover came at the Virginia Tech 1-yard line.
The Hokies then drove 98 yards, converting three third downs and one fourth down before Willis found Dalton Keene for a 1-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion was good and Virginia Tech took a 22-19 lead. UNC had one shot, but their series of laterals came up well short to end the game.
The Hokies get a week off to prepare for Georgia Tech (3-4, 1-3) on Oct. 25 while the Tar Heels head to Syracuse (4-2, 1-2) this Saturday.
