On a Saturday when top ten teams were dropping like flies, the Fighting Irish (7-0) rallied to make sure they weren't one of them against Pitt (3-4).
The Panthers held a 7-6 leading going into the half, but that lead grew quickly when Maurice Ffrench ran back the opening kickoff of the second half 99 yards for a touchdown. Notre Dame finally got into the end zone late in the third quarter when Ian Book found Chase Claypool for a 16-yard touchdown, but they would miss the two-point conversion.
Pitt would leave plenty of chances to build on the lead, but Alex Kessman missed two field goals. That left the door open for the Irish as Book found Miles Boykin for the go ahead 35-yard touchdown. The next two Panthers drives would end with turnovers on downs as they couldn't rally for the upset.
Notre Dame takes a week off before heading to San Diego next for a showdown with Navy (2-4) on Oct. 27.
The Cougars (4-3) decision to start freshman Zach Wilson paid off as his three passing touchdowns and one rushing score led BYU in a rout of Hawai'i (6-2).
Wilson was also backed strong rushing performances from Matt Hadley (91 yards, TD) and Lopini Katoa ( 83 yards, TD). Riley Burt also added a rushing touchdown in the victory.
The Cougars take a week off before hosting Northern Illinois (4-3).
The Flames (3-3) rallied late in the fourth quarter to stun the Troy Trojans (5-2).
The Trojans got on the board first when Deondre Douglas hauled in a 23-yard touchdown from Sawyer Smith. They fell behind 14-10 at the half, but two Tyler Sumpter field goals, including one from 50 yards, gave Troy a 16-14 lead in the fourth quarter.
However, Liberty would get a late score with 2:23 left to play as Stephen Calvert found B.J. Farrow and then Farrow caught the two point conversion to make it a six point game. The Trojans would get the ball twice more, but would turn it over on downs and lose to the clock.
The Flames turn to an FCS foe next as Idaho State (4-2) comes to town.
The Black Knights (4-2) got little resistance from San Jose State (0-6) as they ran for 341 yards and five touchdowns.
The Spartans were held to 171 yards of total offense while Army quarterback Kelvin Hopkins Jr. amassed 153 yards and four touchdowns alone. Cam Thomas and Darnell Woolfork added the other touchdowns for the Black Knights. The Army defense also forced four fumbles.
The Black Knights will host the Miami Redhawks (3-4) next.
The Aggies (2-5) did not receive a warm welcome from their former Sun Belt foe as the Ragin' Cajuns (3-3) took New Mexico State to the woodshed.
Christian Gibson ran for three scores while Jason Huntley had 197 total yards of offense with one touchdown in the loss. Josh Adkins had a rough day as he was sacked four times and threw an interception.
New Mexico State will now focus on defending the option attack run by Georgia Southern (5-1).
