Conference USA Week 8 Recap

With two wins between the two teams, you would imagine it wouldn't be pretty, but no one could've predicted the wild finish in this game.
It started in the fourth quarter as the Hilltoppers (1-6, 0-3 CUSA) led 27-19, but the Monarchs (2-6, 1-4) would score on a Kesean Strong run and a Blake LaRussa two-point conversion pass to tie the game with 5:40 left in the game. Gino Appleberry Jr. scored with 1:09 left to give Western Kentucky the lead, but that was quickly erased by a LaRussa touchdown pass to Travis Fulgham with nine seconds remaining. Then it happened.
A roughing the passer penalty set up 57-yard field goal attempt on an untimed down. That kick was well short, but Old Dominion had 12 men on the field to move the kick five yards closer. Once again with no time, the kick came up short, but the Monarchs elected to have a return man catch it and nearly run it back, but Isaiah Harper would be stopped well short to force overtime.
Except it didn't. That's because a Hilltopper committed a facemask somewhere in the return to set up one last untimed down, this time for the Monarchs. Now 15 yards closer because of the penalty, Nick Rice had to make a 26-yard field goal to win it, and he did so to stun the home crowd in Bowling Green, Ky.

The Monarchs are no stranger to strange wins and will look for another when Middle Tennessee State (4-3, 3-1) comes to town.Western Kentucky hopes to keep their season alive when FIU (5-2, 3-0) comes to visit.

The Miners (0-7, 0-3 CUSA) had one last chance to end the nation's longest losing streak, but they came up short against the Bulldogs (5-2, 3-1) for loss number 19 in a row.
J'Mar Smith threw and ran for a touchdown while L'Jarius Sneed scored on the defensive side of the football when he ran back a pick-six. The Miners tied the game on a Jason Finely field goal in the fourth quarter, but Smith scored on a 43-yard run to take the lead with 6:32 left.
UTEP got down to the La Tech 8-yard line in the final 1:30, but a sack pushed them back to a fourth and 20. Brandon Jones' pass sailed out the back of the end zone to miss a chance to win for the first time since 2016.
Since losing to Tennessee three of the last four games for UTEP have been decided by seven points or less.
The Bulldogs will now head to Florida Atlantic (3-4, 1-2) on Friday while UTEP takes another shot at their first win when they host UAB (6-1, 4-0) on Saturday.
