The Buffaloes a 5-0 for the first time since 1998 and improved to 2-0 in the PAC 12 thanks to a game of keep away in the final 7:10 to avoid the upset at the hands of Arizona State (3-3, 1-2).
The Sun Devils got the scoring started on their first drive of the game that lasted over six minutes and went 86 yards before being capped by an Eno Benjamin 1-yard touchdown run. Colorado responded with a quick drive that also ended in a 1-yard plunge into the end zone, but this came from receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. Both teams missed field goals on their next drive before Benjamin followed with another 1-yard TD run and Shenault caught a 3-yard score from Steven Montez to make it 14-14 at the half.
ASU once again began the scoring in the second half when Manny Wilkins hooked up with Frank Darby for a 40-yard touchdown. That lead was short lived as Shenault found the end zone for the third time when he hauled in a Montez pass for a 30-yard score. Shenault put the Buffs on top for good when he added his fourth overall touchdown and second rushing TD to make it 28-21.
The Sun Devils would innocently punt the ball away with 7:10 remaining. Colorado was able to hold the ball for the remainder of the game thanks it part to a pair of catches by Shenault on third down to move the chains and bleed the clock.
The Buffaloes look to keep their winning ways going on the road at USC (3-2, 2-1) while ASU will regroup and await Stanford (4-2, 2-1) on Oct. 18.
Stanford (4-2, 2-1 PAC 12) added their name to the list of ranked teams that lost on Saturday as the Utes (3-2, 1-2) defense forced four turnovers and stunned the home crowd.
Zack Moss had 20 carries for 160 yards with two touchdowns to lead Utah while Tyler Huntley threw for another score. Matt Gay added four field goals for the Utes while Jaylon Johnson picked off K.J. Costello and returned it 100 yards for the score to ensure that Utah never trailed in the game.
Costello did throw for 381 yards and a touchdown and had three receivers (Kaden Smith, J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, Trenton Irwin) finish with 100 yards or more.
Utah will host Arizona (3-3, 2-1) on Friday while Stanford takes a week off before heading to Arizona State on Oct. 18.
Another insurgence form a defense to pull off an upset as the Wildcats (3-3, 2-1 PAC 12) forced four Cal (3-2, 0-2) turnovers including three interceptions thrown by Brandon McIlwain.
Arizona got out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a Khalil Tate 31-yard touchdown pass to Tony Ellison. The Bears would own the second quarter as they scored two on McIlwain 20 plus yard touchdown runs to make it a 14-10 game at the half.
The Wildcats would not need to worry about their lack of offensive production as McIlwain provided all Arizona would need. In the third quarter Azizi Hearn picked off the Cal QB and returned it 34 yards to give the Wildcats the lead. Late in the fourth quarter the Arizona defense struck again when Scottie Young picked off McIlwain and ran it back 24 yards to put his team up 24-14. Cal added a quick field goal, but failed to recover the onside kick to seal their defeat.
Arizona heads to Utah (3-2, 1-2) on Friday while Cal hosts winless UCLA (0-5, 0-2).
The Beavers (1-5, 0-3 PAC 12) held a 30-28 lead in the third quarter, but watched as the Cougars (5-1, 2-1) racked up 28 straight points to put away Oregon State on the road.
Gardner Minshew threw for 430 yards and five touchdowns to spark the rally for Washington State, with 119 of those yards and two touchdowns going to Davontavean Martin. Max Borghi also found the end zone twice on the ground for the Cougars.
Jermar Jefferson continued his quiet strong season with 139 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Beavers. B.J. Baylor had the other touchdown for Oregon State in the loss.
Washington State will be off for a week to prepare for Oregon while Oregon State takes the week to prepare for Cal also on Oct.20.
The Bruins (0-5, 0-2 PAC 12) made it interesting, but were unable to pull off the upset of Washington (5-1, 3-0) has now won five straight.
The Huskies held a comfortable lead of 24-7 at the half, but UCLA found life in the fourth quarter after adding a field goal in the third quarter that made it a two score game. At the beginning of the fourth, Dorian Thompson-Robinson found Caleb Wilson for a 9-yard touchdown that brought UCLA to withing seven.
The Bruins chance to tie ended in a punt before Washington held the ball for nearly seven minutes and capped their long drive with a Myles Gaskin 2-yard touchdown run. UCLA refused to quit as they quickly went 75 yards and finished it with a Joshua Kelley 2-yard run. The onside kick failed and the Huskies would run out the clock to finish off the victory.
Washington will head to Oregon (4-1, 1-1) next for a ranked showdown while UCLA's search for win number one heads to Cal (3-2, 0-2).
