American Week 9 Recap

D'Eriq King had a day to remember with 419 yards passing, 132 yards rushing, and seven total touchdowns as Houston (7-1, 4-0 American) handed USF (7-1, 3-1) their first loss of the season.
Jeremy Singleton had five catches for 125 yards and a score while Marquez Stevenson caught six ball for 106 yards and two TDs from King. The Cougars finished with 682 yards of total offense.
Johnny Ford had 106 yards and two touchdowns in the loss for the Bulls. A field goal and a safety made it 28-26 early in the fourth quarter, but the Cougars pulled away with 29 of the games final 39 points. The Cougars have now won five straight.
Houston has a strong chance of entering the Top 25 with their win and will head to SMU (3-5, 2-2) next. The Bulls look to regroup when Tulane (3-5, 2-2) comes to town.

The Bearcats (7-1, 3-1 American) and Mustangs (3-5, 2-2) headed to overtime for the second straight year, but it was Cincinnati who came out on top this time.
UC led 17-7 thanks to two Khalil Lewis touchdown catches from Desmond Ridder, but Ben Hicks found Reggie Roberson Jr. for a 22-yard touchdown and two Kevin Robledo field goals gave SMU a 20-17 lead late in the fourth. Cole Smith drilled a 41-yard field goal as time expired to send the game into overtime.
In overtime it would last a total of three plays as the Bearcats defense would pick off Hicks and James Wiggins returned it 86 yards to victory. Lewis finished with 174 yards receiving while Roberson led the way for the Mustangs with 147 yards.
UC returns home for a showdown with Navy (2-6, 1-3) while SMU hosts Houston (7-1, 4-0).

The Golden Hurricane (1-7, 0-4 American) were in position to win their second contest of the season, but Tulane (3-5, 2-2) rallied to officially eliminate Tulsa from bowl contention.
Tulsa built a 17-7 lead thanks to a Keylon Stokes receiving and rushing touchdown. Justin McMillian scored on a 1-yard run and Merek Glover added a field goal to tie the game. McMillan scored on a 39-yard touchdown with 3:46 to play to give the Green Wave their first lead of the day.
The Golden Hurricane had one last shot, but Seth Boomer was sacked to set up a long fourth and 18. Boomer found Justin Hobbs, but he was well short of the first down and Tulane ran out the clock for the win.
The Green Wave now head to USF (7-1, 3-1) while Tulsa hosts UConn (1-7,0-4) as both teams look for their second win of the year and first conference win.

The Minutemen (3-6) rallied to score 13 in the fourth quarter to knock off the Huskies (1-7).
David Pindell had just 15 yards passing, but did finish with 120 yards rushing with a touchdown. Kevin Mensah had the other touchdown on the ground for UConn. Marquis Young put UMass ahead with 3:39 to play and the Huskies rally was thwarted when Pindell was picked off by Lee Moses.
The Huskies now head to Tulsa (1-7, 0-4 American) in a bottom feeder match-up in the American.

The Midshipmen (2-6) took a trip out to San Diego and got doubled up by the undefeated Fighting Irish (8-0).
Malcolm Perry had 133 yards rushing while Michael Martin added a touchdown and Zach Abey added two scores on just four carries.
Navy returns to conference play with a trip to Cincinnati (7-1, 3-1 American).
