The defenses were out in full effect on Saturday as the two teams combined for five turnovers, but it was the Aztecs (4-1,1-0 Mountain West) who were able to overcome the Broncos (3-2, 1-1) in battle of the last two Mountain West Champs.
San Diego State got on the board first when a Brett Rypien interception set up a 36-yard field goal. The Aztecs returned the favor on their next drive as Ethan Dedeaux fumbled the punt return and set up the Broncos inside the five. Three straight Alexander Mattison runs gave Boise State a 7-3 advantage.
Boise State then watched as their next two drives ended in an interception and a turnover on downs. The Aztecs were able to convert those drives into another three points and converted an interception thrown by Chase Cord led to a Chase Jamsmin 2-yard touchdown.
Both teams were blanked in the third quarter, but San Diego State finally scored early in the fourth quarter when Jordan Byrd burst through for a 72-yard touchdown run, but they would miss their two-point try. The Broncos responded with a score of their own with 3:05 left on another short Mattison touchdown run, but Joel Velazquez missed the PAT. Boise State got one final shot, but went four and out to secure the win for the Aztecs.

San Diego State will host Air Force (2-3, 0-2) on Friday while the Broncos travel to Nevada (3-3, 1-1) on Saturday.

In the wee hours of the morning Hawai'i (6-1, 3-0 Mountain West) rallied late to knock off the visiting Cowboys (2-4, 0-2) from Wyoming.
The two teams battled to a 3-3 halftime and it wouldn't be the offenses that found the end zone first. Chevan Cordeiro was making his first start in place of Cole McDonald, but his first touchdown pass wouldn't come to a Rainbow Warrior, but to Carl Granderson who returned his interception 61 yards to give Wyoming a 10-3 advantage. Cordeiro finally got that touchdown pass late in the third quarter when he connected with Cedric Bryd.
Wyoming retook the lead with 5:31 left to play on a field goal, but Hawai'i would responded with a lengthy drive that included a short fourth down conversion and was capped by a Cordeiro to JoJo Ward 38-yard touchdown pass with 1:26 remaining.
The Cowboys didn't go away quietly as they marched their way down the field before getting stuck in a fourth and 21 after a false start. Tyler Vander Waal did pick up the first down with a 21-yard pass to James Price, but time had expired the Warriors secured the victory.

Hawai'i is 3-0 in the Mountain West for the first time in school history (previously in the WAC) and are now bowl eligible with their sixth win. They'll head to BYU (3-3) while Wyoming stays on the road at Fresno State (4-1, 1-0).

Zahneer Shuler added 53 yards on the ground with two touchdowns for New Mexico. UNLV was held to just 166 total yards of offense, but Max Gilliam did throw two touchdowns in the loss.
The Lobos will hit the road next as they travel to Colorado State (2-4, 1-1) while UNLV heads to Utah State (4-1, 1-0).

Another beat down distributed by Fresno State (4-1, 1-0 MWC) and this time it was at the expense of Nevada (3-3, 1-1) quarterback Cristian Solano, who was picked off three times in his first start of the season.
Marcus McMaryion tossed two touchdowns including one to Ronnie Rivers, who also added a rushing touchdown. The Nevada defense actually performed well limiting the Bulldogs to 271 total yards of offense including just 30 yards rushing.
Fresno State welcomes Wyoming (2-4, 0-2) while Nevada hosts Boise State (3-2, 1-1).

The Colorado State Rams (2-4, 1-1 MWC) were on the ropes on the road at San Jose State (0-5, 0-2), but they scored the final 14 points to avoid giving the Spartans their first win of the season.
The Rams jumped out to a 28-0 lead at the half when K.J. Carta-Samuels tossed two touchdowns to Preston Williams and then another two to Warren Jackson. Then came San Jose State.
It started with a Josh Love touchdown pass to Tre Hartley and then Tyler Nevens ran it form six yards for another score. Love and Hartley connected on a big play and with just 2:08 left, the Spartans only trailed by seven. Carta-Samuels was picked off to set up a short game tying touchdown by Thai Cottrell and five seconds later, the Spartans recorded a safety to rack up 30 points in the third quarter to take the lead.
Izzy Matthews plowed ahead for a 1-yard touchdown to end the run and put the Rams back on top. On the ensuing drive Love's pass on third and 15 was picked off and returned 55 yards by Rashad Ajayi. The Spartans responded quickly, but Love was intercepted again, this time deep inside Colorado State territory. A punt and a turnover on downs would keep San Jose State out of the win column.
The Rams welcome New Mexico (3-2, 1-0) next while the Spartans will host Army (3-2) over at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, the home of the San Francisco 49ers.

Jordan Love was unstoppable on Friday night as he threw a career-high four touchdowns and ran for another to score to help the Aggies (4-1) capture the Old Wagon Wheel for the second straight year over BYU (3-3).
Since their big win against Wisconsin, the Cougars are just 1-2 while Utah State is 4-0 since their close loss at Michigan State. Darwin Thompson had 109 yards on the ground for the Aggies while their defense held BYU to just 39 yards rushing. The Utah State defense also got the scoring going when Tipa Galeai picked off Tanner Mangum and returned it 56 yards for the score.
The Aggies return home to continue Mountain West play against UNLV (2-3, 0-1 MWC).

The Falcons (2-3) couldn't be happier with the way the first leg of the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy went as they held Navy (2-3) to just 178 total yards of offense.
Donald Hammond III ran for three touchdowns and threw for 142 yards and a touchdown. The big play in the passing game came when Hammond and Ronald Cleveland connected for a 61-yard score.
Air Force will not play Army until Nov. 3, but a win in that game would give them the trophy back after losing it to the Black Knights last season.
Before all that, the Falcons will head to San Diego State for a tough match-up with the Aztecs (4-1, 1-0 MWC).
