Eastern Michigan (2-4, 0-3 MAC) hasn't won the Michigan MAC Trophy since 2012 and got off to the wrong start as they lost by less than seven points again as Western Michigan (4-2, 2-0) looks to win it for the fourth time in five years.
The Broncos turned the Eagles over on downs to start the game and then got a 14-yard touchdown run by LeVante Bellamy to put the first points on the board. EMU responded in the second quarter when Tyler Wiegers found Gunnar Oakes for a 16-yard score. Wiegers was responsible for setting up the next scoring drive, but it was to aid WMU as he was sacked and stripped. That led to a Jamauri Bogan touchdown run. EMU would add a last second field goal to make it 14-10 at the half.
The Eagles took the lead when Mike Glass III scrambled in for a 4-yard touchdown. The Broncos wouldn't respond until the fourth quarter when quarterback Jon Wassink pushed ahead for a 1-yard touchdown run. That lead grew when Wassink and Bellamy picked up their second touchdowns of the game when the duo connected for a 15-yard touchdown pass.
The Broncos would have their PAT blocked to make it a 10 point game, but the Eagles missed a 32-yard chip shot to make it a one score game. They would get a last minute touchdown when Glass connected with Blake Banham, but they failed to secure the onside kick.
The Eagles have now lost four games while the Broncos are trending up having won four straight. WMU will head to Bowling Green (1-5, 0-2) while EMU welcomes Toledo (3-2,1-0) for Homecoming. The Rockets have won the last 11 meetings.
For the ninth straight year the Bowling Green Falcons (1-5, 0-2 MAC) were unable to defeat Toledo (3-2, 1-0) as the Rockets used a 21 point run in the fourth quarter to pull away on Saturday.
Those 21 points all came on Bryant Koback runs, while Eli Peters threw three touchdowns to help propel the Rockets. Jarret Doege had three touchdowns passing in the loss and Andrew Clair added two more on the ground to go with his 118 yards rushing for the Falcons.
Toledo looks to spoil Eastern Michigan's (2-4, 0-2) Homecoming and are going for their 12th straight win over the Eagles. BG hopes to end their three game losing streak, also on Homecoming, as they welcome the Western Michigan Broncos (4-2, 2-0).
Buffalo (5-1, 2-0 MAC) burst out to a 17-3 lead at halftime, but Central Michigan (1-5, 0-2) rallied in the third quarter, but could not overcome the early deficit.
The Chippewa's held Tyree Jackson and the high powered Bulls passing attack to 127 yards, but Jackson accounted for two touchdowns on the day. Kevin Marks finished with 167 yards and a score and Jaret Patterson added 121 yards and a touchdown to aid the Buffalo running attack to over 300 yards.
Tommy Lazzaro had a rough afternoon despite rushing for 108 yards. Lazzaro had a touchdown pass, but was just 9-of-23 for 117 yards and threw four interceptions for CMU.
Buffalo will host Akron (2-2, 0-1) next while the Chippewa's return home for a match-up with Ball State (2-4,1-1).
Ball State (2-4, 1-1 MAC) got as close as five points in the fourth quarter, but the Huskies (3-3, 3-0) were able to stave off the comeback.
D.J. Brown got the scoring started when he hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Marcus Childers and Tre Harbison made it 14-0 with a 1-yard run. He would do the same in the third quarter while the Cardinals could only manage three Morgan Hagee field goals to make it 21-9 after three.
Finally James Gilbert found the end zone with a 3-yard run to cut the lead to 21-16 thanks to an interception. Northern Illinois responded with a field goal to make it an eight point game and Ball State would watch their next two drives stall at the NIU 29 and 35 respectively.
The Huskies will welcome Ohio (3-2, 1-0) while Ball State travels to CMU (1-5, 0-2).
The Bobcats (3-2, 1-0 MAC) got a late touchdown to overcome a deficit as large as 13 points to stun Kent State (1-5, 0-2).
The Golden Flashes built up a 14-0 lead early n thanks to a 75-yard and 1-yard touchdown pass by Woody Barrett. Ohio responded with an A.J. Ouellette touchdown run and Kent State added a field goal to make it a 17-7 at the half.
The Golden Flashes added another field goal to start the scoring in the second half, but the Bobcats cut into the lead with a 59-yard touchdown connection from Nathan Rourke to Andrew Meyer. Kent State continued to settle for field goals as they pushed the lead back up to nine.
In the fourth quarter Ouellette scored for the second time and once again the Golden Flashes got their fourth field goal from Matthew Trickett. The Bobcats continued the scoring trend as Rourke scrambled into the end zone with 1:28 remaining, but the two-point try would fail to make it a one point contest.
Knowing a field goal could win it, the Golden Flashes were able to cross midfield, but Barrett was picked off by Javon Hagan to secure the win for Ohio.
The Bobcats will travel to Northern Illinois (3-3, 3-0) while Kent State heads to Oxford for a showdown with the Redhawks (2-4, 2-1). The win was number 100 for Frank Solich as the head coach of the Bobcats.
The Redhawks (2-4, 2-1 MAC) offense continued to click for the third week in a row as they routed Akron (2-2, 0-1).
Gus Ragland threw for 214 yards and a touchdown while Kenny Young had himself a day with three carries for 78 yards and two touchdowns while also adding a receiving touchdown.
The Zips turned the ball over five times including a fumble recovered in the end zone, but did get a defensive touchdown of their own when Uylsees Gilbert III returned a fumble 46 yards for a score that put Akron up 17-14 at the time. The Zips other touchdown came when Nate Stewart hauled in a 17-yard score from Kato Nelson.
Miami will host Kent State (1-5, 0-2) next while Akron travels to Buffalo (5-1, 2-0).
