Western Kentucky had two un-timed downs to kick a 57-yard field goal and then a 52-yard field goal after a penalty for too many men on the field. Old Dominion had a return man back and he carried the ball 83 yards before being tackled by his facemask. That gave the Monarchs the third straight untimed down and kicked the game winning 26-yard field goal.
Army survived a 14 point comeback by the Redhawks, but Miami went for two in double overtime. Quarterback Gus Ragland escaped somehow and found Kenny Young who nearly weaved his way to the game winning score.
There were also the first win of the season for Nebraska (1-6) while Ohio State (7-1), Cincinnati (6-1), and NCST (5-1) were all handed their first losses of the season. Ohio State was taken to the woodshed by their Achilles known as Purdue while NCST was bashed by Clemson and the Bearcats choked away a lead in the fourth before losing in overtime to Temple.
There are still five undefeated teams left as Alabama (8-0), Clemson (7-0), UCF (7-0), USF (7-0), and Notre Dame (7-0). USF and UCF will play each other later on while Alabama has a week off to prepare for LSU (7-1).
The topsy turvy weekend set up a first in the college football world as Appalachian State (5-1) cracked eked into the rankings at No. 25. It is the first time since joining the FBS that the Mountaineers have been ranked. There lone loss is an overtime defeat in Week 1 at Penn State. They'l have their hands full this Thursday as they head to Georgia Southern (6-1) in a battle for first place in the Sun Belt.
Michigan beat a ranked opponent on the road for the first time since 2006 when they knocked out No. 24 Michigan State.
And sadly there are two teams left in the FBS that do not have a win. Both San Jose State (0-7) and UTEP (0-7) had chances in the fourth quarter to tie or win, but failed to do so. The Miners have not won since the end of the 2016 season (19 straight losses).
