A double overtime thriller sparked by a freshman quarterback seemed like it might be the script for a North Carolina (1-5, 1-3 ACC) win, but Tommy DeVito was responsible for rallying Syracuse (5-2, 2-2).
Eric Dungey led the Orange to a 20-7 lead, but got in a rut as the Tar Heels came charging back in the third quarter. Antonio Williams ran it in from 12 yards out and then Dazz Newsome returned a punt 75 yards to put UNC on top 21-20. Two field goals extended the lead to 27-20, but Freeman Jones missed a key 45-yard field goal to keep Syracuse alive.
The Orange's ensuing drive ended at the UNC 10-yard line, but they were able to get the ball back with 2:07 to play. That was enough time for DeVito to throw his first touchdown of the day, a 42-yard strike to Nykeim Johnson. He threw an interception with 1:07 remaining, but the Tar Heels weren't able to move the ball and the game went to overtime.
In OT it took the Orange just two plays before DeVito connected with Jamal Custis for the touchdown. The Tar Heels responded with a four play drive that ended in a Nathan Elliot touchdown pass to Beau Corrales. UNC couldn't find the end zone in overtime number two, but were able to kick a field goal. Unfortunately for them, a third overtime was not in the cards as DeVito found Ravian Pierce for the game winning touchdown.
Syracuse will welcome newly blemished NCST (5-1, 2-1) while UNC heads to Virginia (5-2, 3-1).
Virginia (5-2, 3-1 ACC) continued to stay hot after stunning Miami last week, as they knocked off Duke (5-2, 1-2) on the road.
Bryce Perkins threw for a touchdown and ran for two more to lead the Cavaliers. Brian Delaney added two field goals, but also missed a pair.
Daniel Jones threw for a touchdown, but was picked off twice and was replaced by T.J. Rahming, who led the Blue Devils to their other touchdown.
Virginia hosts UNC (1-5, 1-3) while Duke heads to Pitt (3-4, 2-1).
A statement win for Clemson (7-0, 4-0 ACC) as the Tigers showed they're undoubtedly the team to beat in the ACC by handing NCST (5-1, 2-1) their first loss on the year.
It might have seemed like a win to hold Travis Etienne to just 39 yards on 15 carries, but it was less effective for the Wolfpack as the Clemson back scored three times. Tee Higgins caught nine passes for 119 yards and the lone touchdown from Trevor Lawrence.
NCST committed three turnovers including two interceptions thrown by Ryan Finley. Reggie Gallaspy II had the lone touchdown for NCST and led the Wolfpack with 59 yards rushing.
Clemson looks to stay on top as they head to Florida State (4-3, 2-3) while NCST travels to Syracuse (5-2, 2-2).
Wake Forest (3-4, 0-3 ACC) started off with a 10-0 advantage, but Florida State (4-3, 2-3) rattled off 38 unanswered points to cruise to a victory.
The Seminoles were led by Deondre Francois who threw for 353 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite target was Nyqwan Murray who had eight catches for 131 yards and a score. Cam Akers added 13 carries for 98 yards and two touchdowns in the win.
Sam Hartman threw for two touchdowns in the loss for the Demon Deacons.
Florida State will now host Clemson (7-0, 4-0) while Wake Forest head to Louisville (2-5, 0-4) as someone will win their first ACC contest of the season.
