This match-up lived up to the hype in a potential PAC 12 knockout game for the College Football Playoff as the Ducks (5-1, 2-1 PAC 12) avoided another late let down at home against Washington (5-2, 3-1).
The Huskies got off to a rough off to a rough start as Jake Browning threw an interception that led to an Oregon field goal. Washington would answer with a field goal of their own and got a gift from the Ducks as Tony Brooks-James fumbled the kickoff return. Salvon Ahmed punched it in with a 25-yard touchdown run, but Oregon tied it right back up with a Justin Herbert touchdown pass to Dillon Mitchell. The two teams traded punts before Ahmed added a second touchdown and Herbert finished the second half with is second touchdown pass to tie it up at 17 going into the half.
Oregon opened the scoring in the second half with a lengthy 15 play, 88 yard drive that was capped by a C.J. Verdell 1-yard touchdown run. That lead was short lived as the Huskies responded with a Browning 43-yard touchdown pass to Ty Jones. The Ducks would miss a 42-yard field goal and the Huskies fumbled deep in Oregon territory to spoil chances to win in regulation. The last blow in regulation came when Peyton Henry made a 37-yard field goal, but was iced by Oregon. His next kick sailed wide right and the game headed to overtime.
In overtime, Henry was able to convert his field goal, but the Ducks were able to convert a third and 11 before Verdell plowed through for his second touchdown of the game to win it for Oregon. Washington was forced to play the second half with leading rusher Myles Gaskin and Ahmed playing sparingly due to injury.
The Ducks now head to Washington State (5-1, 2-1) while Washington heads home to take on a newly blemished Colorado (5-1, 2-1) team.
Utah (4-2, 2-2 PAC 12) cruised to victory after Arizona (3-4, 2-2) lost starting quarterback Khalil Tate on Friday night.
Tyler Huntley got the Utes ahead 35-0 before giving way to two different Utah quarterbacks. Huntley had two passing touchdowns and a rushing score while Zack Moss and Armand Shyne both had rushing touchdowns as well. The Utes ran for 230 yards as a team in the win.
Rhett Rodriguez, the son of former Wildcats coach Rich Rodriguez, threw his first career touchdown pass in relief of Tate. Arizona was just 6-of-18 on third down and 1-of-5 on fourth.
Utah host USC (4-2, 3-1) next while Arizona heads to UCLA (1-5, 1-2).
The misery is over in Los Angeles, as the Bruins (1-5, 1-2 PAC 12) finally made their way into the win column by completely dominating Cal (3-3, 0-3).
The Bears have now dropped three straight after being ranked, as PAC 12 play has proved unkind. UCLA forced Cal into five turnovers with one of those being returned for a touchdown.
The Bruins got a big performance from Joshua Kelley who carried the ball 30 times for 157 yards and three touchdowns. J.J. Molson finished with 13 points after connecting on three field goals and all four extra points.
UCLA will now try to make it two in a row as they host Arizona (3-4, 2-2) while Cal searches for PAC 12 win number one on the road at Oregon State (1-5, 0-3).
The Buffaloes (5-1, 2-1 PAC 12) were one of three undefeated teams to lose Saturday as the Trojans (4-2, 3-1) bottled up Colorado's big play offense to just 265 total yards.
Laviska Shenault Jr. had a rushing touchdown, but for the most part was contained. Steven Montez had a rushing touchdown, but his only passing score was a pick-six that put USC up 28-7 at the time.
J.T. Daniels threw for 272 yards and three touchdowns with Michael Pittman Jr. hauling in five catches for 144 yards and two scores.
USC heads to Utah (4-2, 2-2) while Colorado travels to Washington (5-2, 3-1) in a game that no longer carries national implications after the Huskies and Buffs lost.
