It looked like the Bearcats (6-1, 2-1 American) were poised for another win, but a late rally by Temple (5-3, 4-0) forced overtime and the Owls were able to pull off the upset.
Michael Warren II had a big day for Cincinnati with 132 yards and a touchdown while Chalres McClelland added four carries for 70 yards and a score that helped give UC a 17-10 lead going into the fourth quarter. That lead could have been larger, but Cole Smith missed three field goals.
Anthony Russo hung in there despite throwing three interceptions to lead the Owls down the field and found Branden Mack for a 20-yard touchdown to tie the game with 49 seconds left. It took him just three plays in overtime to throw his third touchdown to put Temple on top.
A fumble and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty put the Bearcats in an impossible third and 36. Desmond Ridder avoided more pressure, but was picked off by Shaun Bradely to secure the upset.
Temple will try to make it back to back wins against ranked opponents as they head to UCF (7-0, 4-0) on Nov. 1. The Bearcats will stay on the road as they head to SMU (3-4, 2-1).
A lightning delay and a 2-0 first quarter were just the appetizers for a wild finish in New Orleans as SMU (3-4, 2-1 American) stunned Tulane (2-5,1-2) late, nearly five hours after the opening kickoff.
The Green Wave turned a safety into nine points as Darius Bradwell capped the ensuing drive with a 10-yard touchdown. The Mustangs responded with a 55-yard touchdown pass from Ben Hicks to Xavier Jones to make it 9-7 at the half.
Hicks threw a touchdown at the beginning of the second, but it was to Donnie Lewis Jr., who returned it 49 yards for a Green Wave score. Hicks found his own teammate for the next touchdown as Reggie Roberson Jr. hauled in the score.
In the fourth quarter Jonathan Banks scrambled in for a three yard score to put Tulane up by nine, but SMU responded quickly as it took just five plays before Braeden West scored on a 29-yard run. It stayed a two point game until the 1:15 mark when Hicks came through with a 67 yard touchdown pass to James Proche, but the PAT would be missed to make it 27-23. The Green Wave got to midfield, but Banks was sacked and stripped to allow SMU to fall on it and secure the win.
SMU will host Cincinnati (6-1, 2-1) next while Tulane heads to Tulsa (1-6, 0-3).
Houston (6-1, 3-0 American) trailed 24-21 at the half, but a second half onslaught led the Cougars over Navy (2-5, 0-3).
D'Eriq King had a big day for Houston as he threw for 413 yards and three touchdowns while adding another 56 yards and a score on the ground. Marquez Stevenson (141 yards), Courtney Lark (106, TD) and Keith Corbin (104, TD) all had over 100 yards receiving on the day for the Cougars.
The big surprise is that Taylor Jackson had 120 yards receiving and a touchdown to lead the Midshipmen. Navy ran for 344 yards and four touchdowns led by Malcolm Perry, who had 97 yards and a score.
Houston welcomes a ranked opponent in USF (7-0, 3-0) while Navy heads to San Diego for a showdown with Notre Dame (7-0).
The USF Bulls (7-0, 3-0 American) tried to give the game away late to a struggling UConn (1-6, 0-4), but were able to hold on to remain one of the now five unbeaten teams left in college football.
Johnny Ford had just seven carries, but made them all count with 164 yards and three touchdowns for USF. Randall St. Felix had 123 yards receiving with most of them coming on a 75-yard touchdown. Blake Barnett ran for a score and threw for another, but also threw two interceptions.
Quarterback David Pindell ran for 197 yards and two touchdowns while Kevin Mensah added 120 yards and two scores in the loss for the Huskies.
The Bulls head to Houston (6-1, 3-0) while UConn welcomes UMass (2-6).
No McKenzie Milton, no problem for the Golden Knights (7-0, 4-0 American) as they extended their win streak to 20 with a drubbing of ECU (2-5, 0-4).
Darriel Mack Jr. got the start for the injured Milton and carried the ball 22 times for 120 yards and a score. Greg McCrae added five carries for 99 yards and a score while Quadry Jones threw one pass for a 42-yard touchdown to Adrian Killins Jr. The Golden Knights defense forced five turnovers including a 94-yard fumble return for a touchdown.
Holton Ahlers threw for 406 yards and a touchdown while leading the Pirates with 69 yards on the ground. Trevon Brown had 10 catches for 145 yards and a score while Deondre Farrier had five catches for 109 yards in the loss.
UCF puts that win streak on hold as they'll wait for an Nov. 1, Thursday night showdown with Temple (5-3, 4-0). ECU will also take the week off to prepare at home for a meeting with Memphis (4-4, 1-3) on Nov. 3.
A week after nearly stunning UCF, the Memphis Tigers (4-4) didn't have any magic left against the Missouri Tigers (4-3).
Brady White threw two touchdowns, but also had two interceptions. White wasn't helped by the fact that star running back Darrell Henderson left the game with an injury in the first quarter. In his place Patrick Taylor Jr. carried the ball 26 times for 115 yards and two scores.
Memphis returns to conference play as they take a week off before heading to ECU (2-5, 0-4 American) on Nov. 3.
Arkansas (2-6) had lost already to two Group of 5 teams, but Tulsa (1-6) wasn't able to get any offense going to stun the Razorbacks.
The Golden Hurricane were led by Shamari Brooks who had 20 carries for 91 yards. Seth Boomer had a rough day as he was sacked six times, threw an interception, and lost a fumble.
Tulsa returns home for a showdown with Tulane (2-5, 1-2 American).
