Fortune favors the bold, but it would not be so for the Redhawks (3-5) as Miami went for two and came up short on a bizarre final play to secure the win for Army (5-2).
Miami rallied to score 14 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime. The teams traded field goals in the first overtime and in the second, Darnell Woolfolk ran in for his second touchdown of the game. The Redhawks scored on Gus Ragland's fourth touchdown pass when Chuck Martin decided to roll the dice.
The Black Knights nearly sacked Ragland on the two-point try, but he was able to escape somehow and find Kenny Young, who nearly cut through Army defenders before being tackled just short of the end zone.
Army hopes for a much less exciting victory when they head to Eastern Michigan (4-4) next.
The Flames (4-3) welcomed FCS Idaho State (4-3) to Virginia and found themselves in a dogfight with the Bengals.
Stephen Calvert threw for 362 yards and two touchdowns, but was picked off twice. Antonio Gandy-Golden had ten catches for 142 yards and two scores for Liberty. Frankie Hickson had a big day on the ground with 22 carries for 133 yards and three scores.
The Flames take the week off before heading to UMass.
Andrew Ford threw for 326 yards and a touchdown, but it wasn't enough to help UMass (2-6) defeat the Chanticleers (4-3).
Coastal Carolina outscored the Minutemen 21-7 in the second half.
UMass will head to UConn (1-6) next.
The Aggies (2-6) had no answer for the option as Georgia Southern (6-1) ran for 389 yards and six touchdowns.
Jason Huntley had 68 yards and three rushing touchdowns in the loss for New Mexico State.
The Aggies get a good chance for a win next week as they head to Texas State (1-6).
